The Dousman House — Attraction in Prairie du Chien

We originally planned to have our wedding at the Dousman House on June 29th of this year. We had been to a wedding at this venue and fell in love with the aesthetics. It is gorgeous and is in a picturesque location.

However, we did not end up having our wedding here. Based on the flooding this spring we made the decision to relocate our wedding to a different venue. Looking back I am so glad we did. Our experience with the coordinator at The Dousman House was incredibly poor. I often felt like there were unaddressed issues and I had many questions that were left unanswered. Our first tour was not great. The coordinator is was unknowledgeable about many of the questions we were asking and led us to believe things that were not true. For example, we were told we could waive the fee for Sunday clean up because we was being taken out of the contract. This was not true. We were told we could use chairs from inside out for our wedding ceremony. This was also not true. When we got the contract to sign we were upset that she led us astray but we realized it was in the contract and were still willing to sign. I get very uneasy but knew this venue was great and we knew people had gotten married here before. I let it go. As time passed and we realized just how bad the flooding really was, my fiancé and I began to brainstorm alternatives for our wedding. I started to ask questions to the coordinator about how exactly our deposit would work if we had to move. We were told that we would not receive our deposit back because the flooding was going down and it would be fine to have the wedding. I will say that this is fair. The venue was accessible and not damaged, however the grounds and are around were absolutely disgusting. I could not imagine having my wedding there. The coordinator was not the least bit helpful or understanding of our situation in this moment. I felt completely disregarded and unvalued. We moved forward with another venue and never looked back. I would like to say we moved based on the flooding however after the horrible customer service we received a huge part of our move was based on that. We did not feel comfortable keeping the wedding at this venue with this kind of service. I could not be sure that my guests and vendors would be treated fairly at this establishment. As I stated, this is a beautiful venue and a gorgeous location. However, there is a lot that could be improved upon. For the price, there are many changes that could happen to be bring this venue up to the caliber of comparable establishments. This review is not at all related to The Barn catering. They were fabulous throughout the whole process and I feel badly that they did not receive our business.

I chose to have my wedding at The Dousman House and am so happy I did! The location of the venue is absolutely perfect, with the most beautiful view of the Mississippi River. We had our ceremony outside on the veranda and had the most beautiful view. The venue did an AMAZING job landscaping and the hydrangeas looked perfect, I love that we got such a beautiful background for our photos! We had 500 guests at our reception and the large space was so fitting and accommodating to everybody! The food choices and buffet were amazing and the The Barn Restaurant did exquisite! The waitstaff made everything flow so easily and even with our large party, everybody got through the buffet line in 30 minutes! With our large crowd, and heavy drinkers the bartenders were on top of it and did an amazing job also!! They ordered in our favorite champagne for the event and we were so thankful to be able to have that for our families, toasts, and for the girls to get ready with!! The set up was very easy and they worked around our time frame to allow us into the venue at times that worked best for us! The bridal suite made getting ready for the girls a breeze and we had a private place to fix our hair and make up throughout the entire day and night. They had a refrigerator that they allowed us to keep our cake and cupcakes in which was a relief to not have to worry about those details the day of our wedding!! They had everything ready for us on Friday so all we had to do was bring in our flowers and centerpieces! They made every detail of our wedding so easy and made our planning very minimal which saved us from stressing out about the little details! Our pictures turned out so beautifully and I am so thankful for everything! I give the Dousman House a 12/10 for helping me to have the perfect day and the wedding of my dreams!! Our daughter was married at the Dousman House this weekend, it’s a stunning historical venue on the river. It’s centrally located for hotel, dining, and entertainment. The venue is stunning and a beautiful location for photos inside and out. We had the ceremony outdoors on the patio and reception inside taking advantage of the entire property. The bridal prepping suite is gorgeous and spacious. I can’t say enough good things about the event coordinator, Hannah, she is an absolute pleasure to work with and is very responsive. The entire staff, servers, bartenders, and kitchen crew were fantastic and very pleasant. The meal was delicious and nicely presented.
