In the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area's Mid-Peninsula, Redwood City's Bair Island is a sprawling 3,000-acre gem, divided into Inner, Middle, and Outer Islands. This natural wonder is part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and also serves as the Bair Island Ecological Reserve in California. Surrounded by the Steinberger Slough and Redwood Creek, and separated by the Corkscrew Slough, this haven is said to be home to many Harbor Seals, though I didn't spot any today—probably snoozing. I explored the Inner Island Walk of the Bair Island Trail today, a perfect length for a leisurely stroll. There's also a Marina where not only pedestrians but also boats and kayaks can be found. A great spot for a day out in nature!

This is an amazing place and project. I grew up in Redwood City, and this place was completely different when I was a kid. In the early 2000s a restoration of Bair island was started, to restore the local ecology here. Allowing nature to reclaim and thrive in an area takes time. Lots of progress has been made over the last year and there's promise of a timelapse video to show it. There are signs from which visitors can take a picture and submit to the video project. Check out Instagram #restorebair1 and #restorebair2 to get a peak at the transformation. Other reviews are likely dated and not a reflection of the current state. It is not just for residents of the nearby housing developments and has access to the bay trail cycling road that goes parallel highway 101. The two main draws for me are the views of the bay, and the facinating local wildlife. I'm partial to the birds.

A little known island nestled alongside highway 101. Once you enter you can go 0.3 miles to the left and reach the first observation deck, OR you can go left and reach the second observation deck in about two miles. The trails don't connect in a circle so whichever way you go you'll have to come back the same distance. It's worth the drive to get here only about 30-35 minutes from San Jose and about the same distance from SF. Thanks to all those who fought hard to preserve and restore this...

Very nice opportunity to see wildlife just minutes from the highway. Restrooms available. Children friendly with nice, short interpretive trail with many informative plaques. Although not paved I believe it could almost be considered ADA accessible. Summer months are a bit slower in terms of birds presence but in the winter months it is pretty great. Very nice example of how the bay area offers nature access (although in an urbanized environment) to everyone willing...
