Whether you're a mead maven, or have yet to experience the honeyed alcohol of olde, this should be your #1 RVA destination to check out.
Located in arguably the most quality craft brewery dense few blocks in the know world, Black Heath is a fairly unassuming and quaint location that might easily be overlooked if it weren't for its variety of high-end meads.
Bill, the owner, is the most knowledgeable, friendly and helpful man you will ever meet, and genuinely loves mead and just wants to share that love with the world.
He'll tell you all about his process, answer any questions or drop some fascinating ancient mead knowledge, and even give tips, recommend books or process to check out if you are looking to brew your own!
You can stop in and try a flight so you can sample the vast variety of flavor profiles their meads on tap or in bottles (sealed with beeswax) bring to the table, or just relax with a glass in a pleasant, naturally lit space next to their 'beehive' designed bar.
As for what mead tastes like, what are you looking for?
Want a mead that's fruity? They'll have a bountiful harvest of wonderful fruit meads to sample. Dessert mead? They'll ask for what season. Dry? Options on options. A mead that's spicy? Catch them at the right time, before they sell out of some incredibly well balanced habanero or other assorted pepper mead and they'll blow you away.
All this to say, come in with an open mind because among the sheer variety of top-quality meads, there's almost guaranteed to be one (if not more) that appeal to your personal palate.
Plus, everyone who works there is super nice and genuinely excited to show you the versatility of honey alcohol and show you why this isn't just an esoteric option limited to, say, classicists or a foodie audience.
So, if you're in the neighborhood checking out any of the top notch breweries around the Scott's Addition area, be sure to stop by Black Heath and make it a part of your tour. You'll be...
Read moreI love mead so when my wife and I are traveling we always try and take advantage of sampling the local mead artisans scene.
Black Heath Meadery checks all the boxes for me! Great tasting meads, equally great spectrum of different styles that range the all flavor profiles, welcoming engaging staff and cool eclectic welcoming taproom ambiance.
We sampled about 8 different meads and I was impressed with the majority. the ones I did not care was because it was related to flavor and not craftmanship.
Only issue we had was trying to order meads (about 8 bottles) while we were at the tap-room. One staff member told us we could directly while at the tap room when we went back up with our bottle selection another staff member said it's easier to order on-line and encouraged us to do that. Well, we were traveling and that was not going to happen. So no bottles... My only disappointment. Seems like the staff member just did not want to be inconvenienced, that's the impression I was left...
