My mother got this as a gift for my sisters and me and we made a day of visiting Roanoke, ending it with a visit to Board and Brush. The only good thing about the experience was the fact that my sisters and I could commiserate about our horrible experiences here. I'm color blind and so can't see colors terribly well from far away, and so when they directed our attention to the displays on the walls, I couldn't make out what they were referring to. So I, as I often do, took a picture of the color sample boards and a few of the examples hanging on the walls to have a reference I could look at closely as I worked. Within minutes, the owner of the establishment accosted me, demanding I never post those pictures to social media and only relented when I spoke frankly to her, telling her that I had no social media accounts and no desire to post crappy photos. Additionally, we had problems with the prints we had asked for and had to wait an additional half-hour while the corrected their mistakes on 3 of the 5 we'd ordered. Don't even ask if you can use the failed stencil; they'll make you feel like an idiot.
On to the staff. The room is broken up into work stations and each section is attended to by a single staff member. Ours was kind and helpful, and fun to talk to. Every other person there was rude, ignored questions and flat-out brushed us off. My sister chose a complicated piece and instead of patiently helping her with her stencil, her staff member simply pulled the stencil off, blurring and smudging the complex lines. When it came time to touch up, she simply said, "No one can see it from far away."
Honestly, the concept is fun and we would have had a great time making our signs if the staff had even a glimmer of kindness. Instead, it seems that the owners hiring practice consists of looking for the most rude, pretentious teenagers they can find to make what should be a fun outing into an infuriating experience. If you go to Roanoke, just eat at Joseph DeCuis and go home to make a sign. It'll cost a lot less, both in...
Read moreThe idea is definitely fun and creative. However, I think the execution and planning could be a little smoother. For one, all the employees were on their phones, so it took a while for them to look up and notice if you had a question. Being on your phone appears as if you are not interested in helping out, which is the essence of your role. Also, it is very inconsiderate and unprofessional. Another thing is that some people have smaller signs, while other signs are very large. So some people get done much sooner than others and have a lot of extra time, while others are very rushed at the end to finish up their larger signs. It may be helpful to have smaller signs work together while larger signs work at a different pace. Overall it was a fun concept, however, improvements in employee eagerness would make these projects...
Read moreWe had a group of 4 go for a bonding night. 1 male and 3 females. It was a DIY night so we all picked our own project. The drinks were complimentary. The instructor was amazing. The assistants were willing to jump in and assist. They all had tons of knowledge. Helped to pick colors that complimented my project. Made amazing suggestions. Like adding a tiny bit of glitter to give it some pop. It was an incredible experience. I would highly recommend it. The project I felt was fairly priced. You get a solid wood...
