Attended matinee showing of West Side Story on its first Saturday opening. Was astonished that there were no more them 5-6 people in attendance. There were no ticket takers in the lobby, and the concession staff waved us through. Yes, this is an older theatre, so the seats were not as plush, but the ambience is wonderful. Saw no other staff, except at front window and concession. The quality of the projection was great and the surround sound was awsome! Totally enjoyed the movie and the experience! Will definitely return, as this theatre is a monument to movies in Roanoke. So glad it's still around!
Added March, 2022: Returned to the Grandin for it's 90th Anniversary Celebration. Free popcorn and other give away momentos were nice. (Posters, mugs etc) Grandin is hosting free classic movies every other Saturday at 10:00am. See an in house flyer or on line promotion for the schedule. Today we saw the 1932 release of Grand Hotel with Garbo, Crawford and the Barrymore brothers. The sound and picture were great, the comfort was adequate, with about 100 in attendance. A relaxing way the start the weekend, with a movie and then lunch at a Grandin neighborhood restaurant. Upcoming classics include On The Waterfront, Rear Window and more interesting pics! Check out the Grandin!
12/10/22 Returned to The Grandin today for a free showing of "Holiday", a 1938 production starring Cary Grant and a young and beautiful Katharine Hepburn. I was only dissappointed when I realized "Holiday" was not a Christmas related movie! Lol! This showing drew a nice size crowd of over 100 patrons. The sound and visual presentation was excellent, the temperature and movie seats were comfortable and the facility was very clean with no "sticky movie floor". Popcorn and beverages were available. Free community offerings of this nature are a real treat for the community.
7/6/23 Saw a special showing of Pulp Fiction, shown to a packed audience. I had forgotten how graphic some scenes were, and seeing on the big screen made it a little jarring! Also forgot how funny it was at times, and this audience was certainly receptive to the humor. The showing was delayed 20 minutes because the lobby was packed with patrons purchasing tickets and concessions. This showing is part of a weekly Summer Blockbuster Series with a special admission price of $6. Photo of the...
Read moreOkay, so everything looked okay at first, I liked the style of the theater. Then WHAM!!!! Horrible experience imminent! First, we go to our "theater" and it's a little tiny room with a screen that's just a little larger than my dad's flat screen. The chairs are so close together you cannot let someone by without evacuating the whole row. The A/C unit was louder than the movie. The drink I had asked for "no ice" in was nothing but ice with some lemonade on the side. I would have gotten up to fix it, but that might have broken the fire code in this tiny room. Then, when the theater is full, a group of 8 comes in! They didn't even know they sold out their tiny little room! This was also 15 minutes into the movie, so we were distracted for like 10 minutes as this family walks... Well small steps, to try to find a seat. Realizes there are none, stands and the front and has a debate about it. Then they leave and come back just to leave again, and then an employee comes in and looks around! The door opened like 6 times in 10 minutes. Normally, not a big deal, but considering how small this room was, it was ridiculous.
It would have been nice to know ahead of time (like before I bought the ticket and wasted money on crappy, bottoms of the machine popcorn) that we would be in this screening room. What kind of place charges 9.75 to cram people in this sardines can? I mean, I'm all for utilizing the space, but don't charge full price for it!!!!
Nostalgia was not worth it. I figured it had enough good reviews to outweigh the bad, so we went. Awful decision. Pay an extra buck or two and go to a real theater. Only reason we didn't walk out and get out money back was because by the time we finished the bad popcorn, we were already too invested in the movie.... Well, what we could hear over...
Read moreMy wife and I went to see Nosferatu today at 1230. The movie had started and people were coming in with their cell phone camera's on trying to find seats. A big distraction. Then, an elderly person kept bothering every aisle to find seating. He went to seat in front of us but wasnt sure and was bothering us about he should or should not sit in front of us. Then about 20 mins into the film another rather large person came right up to the back row where my wife and I were seated, didn't say excuse me, just said sorry as he went past us. He also had a thermos full of beverages with ice clanking. Then he proceeded to breathe heavily next to us. Mind the theater was no way near full, there was plenty of seating. My wife and I said "screw this" and left. Grandin please either escort people to their seats or don't let anyone come in 10-20 mins after the...
