Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke, Virginia, is an absolute gem! My wife and I were traveling from Western Massachusetts to Florida for a winter getaway and stumbled upon this incredible spot while searching for interesting places to visit in the Roanoke area.
The night before our visit, we decided to check out some episodes of their TV show to get a feel for what the place was like, and we were already excited. But let me tell you—seeing it in person far exceeded our expectations! We were thrilled to even spot a couple of items we remembered from the show, which made the experience even more special.
From the moment we walked in, we were blown away by the unique charm and creativity of this architectural salvage and reuse company. It’s so much more than just a salvage yard—it’s a treasure trove of history, art, and inspiration.
The space is filled with an eclectic mix of reclaimed architectural pieces, vintage finds, and quirky "doodads" and "whatchamacallits" that you never knew you needed but suddenly can’t live without.
What really stood out to us was the support for local artists, whose work is beautifully displayed throughout the store. It’s clear that Black Dog Salvage is not just a business but a community hub that celebrates creativity and sustainability.
We spent hours exploring the aisles, marveling at the craftsmanship and imagining the stories behind each piece. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere.
If you’re passing through Roanoke or even planning a trip specifically to visit, Black Dog Salvage is a must-see. It’s a perfect blend of history, art, and fun—highly recommend stopping in!
We left with unique souvenirs and unforgettable memories. Thank you, Black Dog Salvage, for making our trip even...
Read moreBlack Dog Salvage looks a wee bit different since my last visit. Interior spaces reconfigured, a new design center added, and the outside display area shows many large fountains and decorative garden stakes. In addition, a new mini-amphitheater for casual events, the "Dog Bowl," is tucked in behind the parking area. The area features some rough benches for sitting and luscious green grass on which to spread out. Please telephone ahead or check Black Dog's internet listings to make your travels to Main Street, Roanoke satisfactory. For example, you might want to schedule a visit when homemade doughnuts and drinks are for sale, there is a concert in the "Dog Bowl,", or a Farmer's Market or craft fair is organized on the Black Dog grounds. The interior reconfiguration makes the vendor booths seem more significant and airier. Do you have an idea for furniture using reclaimed materials? Then the Design Center, with its collection of unique wood slabs, idea books, and an on-hand consultant, is worth checking out. The fountains, constructed with recycled pieces of concrete and stone, are unique. In addition, there are large and small decorative gardens composed of vintage glassware and ceramic ware. Black Dog Salvage, located about a seven-minute drive from where I live in Roanoke, VA, tops my go-to list for everything from handmade stationery or realistic-looking artificial flowers for gifts to vintage vases and planters for myself. It's also a perfect place to walk for my exercise while wondering how I'd use some of their unique furniture pieces in...
Read moreI have been to Black Dog Salvage countless times and love how they repurpose and reuse so many things. As someone who works in the sustainable lifestyle space it means a lot, and my cousin is a famous vintage dealer in Long Island so we do a lot in the sector. I also love that my dog is always loved and welcomed, as well as my kids. Until today.
Upstairs there is a piano that I’ve seen kids and adults use. My kids decided today they wanted to play, so I let them, I noticed quickly they were being more heavy handed than they should and went to stop them. Mind you there is no sign not to use it. But a blonde woman on staff who I had never seen before decided to admonish my kids FOR ME. I asked her if the piano was not to be used, she snapped at me and said no. I tried to apologize and say I had seen others use it so I didn’t know. She ignored me and got snippy with my kids to get away. I tried to address her and say I was removing them, but she again ignored me and tried to PHYSICALLY SHUT THE PIANO ON MY KIDS HANDS! I am still enraged thinking about it. I told her that she had no right to do such a thing to my kids and she just said “I didn’t touch them”. Yeah just trying to slam a cover on their hands! We immediately left and I will not return again with my kids and would recommend others with young kids not to visit unless they train staff to interact properly with children.
No matter how much I’ve spent there or how much I usually enjoy the staff this has completely ruined the place for me and thus why...
