Wasena Park — Attraction in Roanoke

I live a few blocks away and walk my dog to the park often. The greenway running through the park is great. There are also two pavilions that provide a good spot for a picnic or cookout. The park can get crowded on the weekends and evenings for softball games. Lots of open green space for throwing a football or playing soccer, frisbee, etc. The tennis courts have been chained shut for a few years because the city didn't want to fix the dangerous holes and cracks throughout the pavement. Lots of shaded area under huge trees. There is a small area where you can access the river, though most of the riverbank has tall grass. Sometimes people swim there ... though I can't imagine that water is very clean. The basketball court has lights and, in warmer weather, will often have a few people playing. I see people at the skate park often when it's warm, but I've never noticed is too crowded. A lovely, local park we are so lucky to have close by!! In a nice neighborhood, I feel safe here. Still a go to of ours. My only complaint about this park is the litter. There must be 20 garbage pails within walking distance of the parking lot and surrounding area and there is still much litter to pick up every day. I pick up what I can but this is ridiculous I don't know how anyone can throw their garbage just anywhere. EDIT: they are ripping down and rebuilding the bridge which means less people at the park.
