I walk this trail a few times per week with my dog, as it's a great distance and has nice scenery. In the early morning hours I occasionally see homeless folks. They have never bothered me, and almost always say hello. Be smart. Like any other place, don't carry any valuables, look people in the eyes, and speak. It's clear that this is a place for the homeless to squat, and they, among others, have left their mess behind. There were actual piles of garbage in certain areas.
