The Woodson African American Museum of Florida — Attraction in Saint Petersburg

This museum is a pure treasure. Nestled in the 22nd Street corridor of South St. Petersburg is there is a treasure trove of black history to learn and observe. A diminutive, gray haired, gorgeous and well spoken young lady met us at the door. Her name is Lynnette. Miss Lynnette welcomed us to the museum wirh hugs. That's right, hugs! My lady and I immediately felt acquainted with the surroundings.

Miss Lynnette then began to extol us with the origins of the museum and it's themed and named originator Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson has no ties to Florida or the museum. The land on which the museum rests, the housings, and the school were donated by a Mr. Jordan. He had one mandate to the city. Make affordable housing and a school for African Americans in this neighborhood. The museum was named after Dr. Woodson because he's the father of Black History recognition. He started with Black History week, which has now broadened into Bla k History month.

The museum's pride and joy are not the fabulous works of art. It is the sprawling yet quaint little garden out back. It has two huge Oak Trees, well in their hundreds of age ,towering over the some 1200 plant species. It had a solemn feel to it, but it made you want to stay and soak in the quiet.

My husband and I had a beautiful experience at the Woodson African American Museum in St. Petersburg.

Upon entry, we were greeted by Ms. Lynnette, who shared the lively and passion filled history of 22nd Street and it's thriving Wallstreet back in the day. I was so proud to hear it!

There is an area of books that I'm going to make a special trip back to view.

ALL of the art is so good, and most of it left me speechless. Be prepared to be rendered speechless and allow the Ancestors to speak to you. The sculptures on display were equally breathtaking.

There is a garden out back that brought me to tears (my eyes are watering now as I remember.) Also large statue of Harriet Tubman is on display through August or September 2025. Prayerfully, you get to see her before she moves onto her next destination.

I cried. We really need more spaces like the Woodson African American Museum. Representation is crucial. God willing, I will be able to make a large donation at some...

Art exhibits change every 8 weeks. The museums website will have a detailed monthly calendar.

The museum has a beautiful and impeccably kept garden, perfect for weddings or anniversaries.

The garden walkways are lined in red brink, visitors can engrave a brick for $100 . There is a maximum 13 characters and 3 lines per brick. This is a really fun way to donate to the museum
