This is a largely decentralized museum/site with a Welcome Center which provides an intro and overview. Park rangers are knowledgeable and the exhibits are presented with passion and expertise. Start with a stop at the very small welcome center, mostly to see the two short back-to-back films and to learn about the various sites scattered through the town. From there, walk and/or drive to the various sites in town which are part of the museum & which demonstrate relevant architecture and history. (The stories are really told there, at the various sites.) When at the Park Welcome Center, ask about various tour times and costs (if any) of the individual site tours. At least one of the historical homes Is presented as if it is part of the national parks site, but actually is maintained by a local non-profit and there is a separate charge for entry and tours which is not clearly disclosed in the materials. Plus the tour time of that home was incorrectly posted at the Park Welcome Center. You'll need to GPS to some of diverse sites, while some are just across the street from the Welcome Center. Despite these very minor aggravations, this is an interesting introduction to a unique bit...

We will be back to see the rest of the site when renovations are complete. Staff also recommended the other Missouri DNR homes in Ste. Genevieve as well as those maintained by the city. This site is one to visit for a wide variety of...
Read moreGrowing up on the west coast, the history around wasn't quite as historical as what the east coast offers. This was eye opening and educational, as well as beautiful. Friendly people at the visitor center. Friendly people in town. And the historical architecture was just breathtaking, especially while considering the era and remembering that these people built this town, which we take for granted in our day to day lives and society, in the wild with their bare hands. Makes me wonder how many of these skills we've lost and how far removed we are from the adventurous explorers...
