My recent visit to the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park was an educational adventure that left me with some mixed but overall positive impressions. The highlight of the visit was attending the "Sky Tonight" show, which is a monthly planetarium presentation hosted by the Fleet's resident astronomer.
The "Sky Tonight" show was fascinating, as it allowed us to explore the solar system and connect with fellow skywatchers. The newly reopened IMAX dome provided an immersive experience, and the visuals were both informative and captivating. However, I couldn't help but wish that the seats were reclining, as craning your neck to look up at the top of the dome for extended periods can be a bit uncomfortable.
The Fleet Science Center itself offers a variety of cool areas and interactive exhibits, making it an excellent place to bring younger kids for an educational and fun day out. The center's commitment to engaging visitors through science and creative visuals is evident throughout.
One notable feature is the workshop area, where you can create sculptures out of used e-waste. The friendly and helpful staff are readily available to assist with any questions, making it easy to dive into the workshop activities.
For kids, this place is a treasure trove of hands-on science activities, and it's well-suited for those aged 12 and under. The interactive exhibits, especially those focusing on waves, electricity, light, and sound, were a hit with my family. The static charge experiment (the shocker) was a particular favorite, offering a memorable and educational experience.
The gift shop at the Fleet Science Center is a science enthusiast's paradise, offering a variety of amazing science toys and gadgets at reasonable prices. It's a great place to pick up educational gifts or souvenirs.
In summary, the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park is a fantastic destination for families, especially those with younger children. The "Sky Tonight" show and the interactive science stations offer a blend of education and entertainment, and the gift shop is a great place to find unique science-related items. I'd recommend spending a half-day exploring the center and, if possible, taking advantage of their free day each month. It's a place where learning about the world around us is both fun...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of attending a Candlelight concert, featuring a remarkable four-person orchestra performing the timeless music of Adele. The ensemble consisted of two talented violinists, a viola, and a cello, each bringing their unique flair and expertise to the stage.
From the moment the first note was played, I was captivated. The intimate setting, illuminated by the warm glow of countless candles, created an atmosphere that was both enchanting and serene. The musicians’ passion and precision were evident in every piece, transforming Adele’s soulful hits into stunning classical renditions.
Each song was a journey, seamlessly blending the emotional depth of Adele’s lyrics with the rich, textured sound of the string instruments. The violinists delivered soaring melodies that were both powerful and delicate, while the viola and cello provided a robust and harmonious foundation. Together, they created a soundscape that was nothing short of magical.
Highlights of the evening included breathtaking performances of “Someone Like You,” “Rolling in the Deep,” and “Hello.” These beloved songs were given new life through intricate arrangements and heartfelt interpretations, leaving the audience in awe. The chemistry and synchronicity among the musicians were palpable, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the performance.
Candlelight’s production was a feast for the senses, offering a unique and unforgettable experience. The combination of beautiful music, an intimate setting, and the mesmerizing ambiance of candlelight made for a perfect evening. If you have the opportunity to attend a Candlelight concert, especially one featuring such a talented ensemble, I highly recommend it. This concert was a true testament to the power of music and the incredible talent of the...
Read moreMy Daughter absolutely loves this place! We have been here multiple times over the past couple months. If you arrive right at opening you may have a small wait to buy tickets, 10 minutes tops. Any other time we have not had to wait at all. Most of the areas are permanent, including the play place upstairs. However, they do have an area that changes up every so often. So far there has been a ball pit that was about 20' across with a "ball fall" as my Daughter called it. Basically the kids fill this trough with the balls and every few minutes it opens up like at a water park and makes a wave of balls. The other attraction was a live animal exhibit that had a handful of reptiles, arachnids, and even a sloth! (This attraction has ended) They also have a tesla coil they actually turn on from time to time, its a bit loud and they talk about the theory of operation. Electrical is my niche, so I may be a bit biased on that one. Don't forget to go see the Imax films while you are there, ome film is included with your ticket price so I recommend checking out whichever piques your interest. We have seen them all at this point and they are all excellent short (45min) films. All-in-all its a great place to learn and get some energy out. My one complaint would be parking can be a pain, however that is out of the science...
