The grinch is a beautiful show. The globe is a wonderful and intimate theatre. The box office and house staff on the other hand, absolutely ruined our experience.
We apparently went to an age restricted show for my sons birthday, however it was not communicated to us at any point in the purchasing process prior to the event. When we arrived, they wouldn’t refund us, get us tickets to another show, or try to accommodate the situation.
They rather lied and tried to gaslight the situation, upcharged me for an additional ticket, and split me and my family. They sent security to intervene but the incredible guard ended up being the most reasonable human who sheparded the only ounce of compassion, sensibility and customer service of the whole evening.
The best part is I just got home and researched the age policy, and after I purchased the additional ticket my family should have been able to see the show without challenge. The staff intentionally went out of their way to harm us in a very childish manner, to retaliate. While I didn’t get to sit with my kids for the show, and the box office targeted my family to harm our evening, my kids were able to finally see the end and the over 400 dollars spent wasn’t a complete waste.
The best part was, our seat neighbors complimented my son’s theatre etiquette as we left the show. The theater is an experience but the staff could really stand some basic customer...

We attended One of the Good Ones at the Old Globe Theater and were surprised—and frankly disappointed—by the lack of essential information in the playbill. While the performance itself may speak for itself, the printed program did not. Rather than offering a synopsis, context, or even basic character descriptions, the playbill was packed with advertising and an author interview that, while interesting, did not provide any meaningful understanding of the play we were about to see.
As frequent theatergoers, we’ve come to expect a certain level of engagement and insight from the materials provided—especially at a venue as reputable as the Old Globe. Most theaters include a brief summary, cast list with character descriptions, and some background to help orient the audience. None of that was present here.
Theater is about storytelling, and that includes every element of the experience—not just what happens on stage. The lack of thoughtful program content made the experience feel commercialized rather than curated. We hope the Old Globe will consider returning to more audience-centered program design...
Read moreSan Diego's Old Globe has always been the best live theater venue in the city. The first play I saw here was Rhapsody Blues by Arthur Miller. Legendary experience.
Lately there have been several off Broadway shows that have come through and San Diego's actually staged a number of plays that originated locally that end up on Broadway.
Local philanthropist Conrad Prebys paid for a complete over haul of the courtyard a few years ago. That face lift added a pub with outdoor seating to enjoy a craft beer, glass of wine or light bite before a show. During the day it just creates a really nice outdoor space to enjoy the ubiquitous San Diego sunshine.
I really like that culture is expanding in San Diego since I grew up here and at the pinnacle of that expansion is the...
