City Hall is absolutely gorgeous, particularly at night. The City occasionally changes the building’s exterior lighting to support the LGBTQI+ community and to root for the Giants, 49ers, Warriors, etc. It’s beautiful. And global history happened there: the signing of the UN Charter occurred on the very spot.
But the plaza, particularly on its south and east sides, is sketchy even during the day.
San Francisco’s severe homelessness is on full display in and around the plaza. Also be prepared to witness drug dealing and open consumption of hard drugs like meth and heroin. You may even witness someone dropping trou and defecating right on the sidewalk. Pay attention to where you step!
