For those who go to Del Monte’s Dog Park. All dog owners need a go-to spot to socialize their dogs. Socializing your dog as puppy and through its adolescence is the best method to ensure your dog becomes a friendly, confident adult! If you don’t socialize them, they become either overprotective over their owners or timid in front of other dogs so they develop bad/unwanted behaviors. Del Monte offers 2 decently sized dog play areas split up into a big and small dog area. People may write reviews here and capture one instance when the dogs here are poorly behaved, however it’s the owners responsibility to not only watch over your dog, but be cognizant of your dogs situation (are they playing with aggressive dogs, or is my dog too aggressive for these other dogs). Nobody’s dog is perfect, they’re all capable of being too aggressive or too playful, etc. Treat your dog as if it’s your child, remove it from any bad situation or dogs that may seem aggressive and you’ll do fine.
You can’t just sit there playing on your cell phone and not watch over your pet. Pretend like you’re a lifeguard making sure nobody drowns or puts them self in a bad situation, predict or be aware of any bad situation and act on it. Since I’ve been going to Del Monte’s Dog Park for a little over a year I’ve only seen a couple “bad” dog fights. The owner of the aggressive dog was responsible enough to muzzle the dog and still continues to come to the park today because they believe socializing the dog with other animals is the best medicine (rather than locking the dog up and keeping it away from public). Del Monte Dog Park has Astro turf which is good for those people who don’t like to bring home a filthy muddy dog, or a dog with hives because it may have allergies to grass.
The only reason why I don’t give the dog park 5 stars is the lights that surround the dog park aren’t bright enough to light the dog parks up in the evening. It would be convenient to take your dog during the evening or at least reasonable night hours. I’m not sure with the addition of the soccer field how the lights their will currently affect the visibility of the dog park during the night. Have fun at this dog park, watch your dog enjoy their visit and get there fix in.
Personally I believe because my dog has been exposed to the dog park environment since a puppy, it’s personality, awareness, and friendliness shines both in and outside the dog park. Shop around for dog parks! This one might not be the best for you and your dog - it took me a few dog parks (Butcher Dog Park, and others) before I found this one. You’ll know when it’s a match for both you...
Read moreFine dog park. a little bit small but definitely adequate. large dogs will not be able to reach top speed but they can run fast and there's plenty of room to get their exercise on. a little touch I really like is the doggy drinking fountain (located low for them)- the location of the "on button" is on a raised platform the same height as the doggy fountain, right next to it, and it is triggered by stepping on it! awesome! don't have to touch it and it's easy to keep water going for a long time, and since it's the only one in the park that's a good thing. there are 6 benches located 2 next to eachother, on 3 sides of the square park. only one set of 2 are in real shade. the others are under trees but they are baby trees so not too shady yet. one set is a little better than the other.
if you don't find parking along Azurias street, there's a bunch of parking right be the actual dog park section, on the back side, off of Sunol. I park there either way but word of warning- it's located at the exit of some sort of tree area that people (transients mostly from what I saw) just sort of emerge from randomly... and I have seen broken window glass from cars on the street. but I don't need to tell you to never leave valuables in view, no matter where you're at.. people aren't like our canine besties. their whole life goal isn't to make us happy. :) too bad cuz that would be a...
Read moreThis is a very nice family-friendly park! It appears to be well maintained with a separate playground for younger children, a dog park, playground, soccer field, basketball hoops, etc. I am looking forward to visiting this park again to get better look at all that's available!
The only exception that did not sit well with me was the restrooms. YES, I have learned to be grateful to NOT not find the message "Sorry! Closed Due to Covid Restrictions". But still.... While I don't believe I've ever seen park restroom facilities look any different, it sure would be nice if one would take a higher road and set an example. The same goes for most gas station restrooms. It is almost unheard of to find a ladies room in either environment that does not have an eerie feeling looming at the door, then screams "user beware!" once the threshold is crossed. Once the mad sprint to complete my task is done the germ-a-phob in me propels me through the exit with lightning speed! Funny thing is, until I hit the fresh air, I don't notice I was humming the theme soundtrack from the Michael Meyers movie...
