St Monica's Church is the ultimate in Godly experience. I worship there most every week. I have a sense of Gods's presence there, the choir is unsurpassed. The descriptions of this magnificent interior edifice say it all.
However a most sobering and soul destroying experience happened last Sunday which requires all trusting souls,to reassess, how and what you do, even if you are in a church. My keys were removed from my handbag sometime during the Mass.
Yes I have heard it all .... "you must have dropped them on the way into the building"..... Then why has no one handed them into the office as yet?.... "The keys must be caught somewhere under the seat".... then if you see them can you please just leave them at the office..... please, please, please....
As it turns out this car does not even belong to me . I just moved back here in October and have been reliant on the graciousness of friends while I get re-established . The wonderful owner has spent upwards of $1,000.00 re keying extensive elements of the car to theft proof it. I have spent a fortune re- keying locks.
So ladies zip up your handbags, hold onto your hats, as lovely as St Monica's is vigilance is a must. I am now told that billfolds and rosary beads are the usual targets at St Monica's Church. I am still waiting for an appointment to see the Monsignor about the matter.
If you are the person reading this who thinks stealing keys is a fun thing to do. Trust me, it is NOT ! As surprising as it may be, the ramifications are many.I feel so bad for so many that this wilfull , foolish act has involved and hurt! In addition to which God would not like it and it causes angst , mistrust and abject disappointment. Not to mention the beaucoup expense with money which could have helped one of the many worthy missions around, even in Santa Monica).
If you have second thoughts, please leave the keys at St Monica's Office it will help redeem my perspective of the world around us! Best of all it will redeem you ! Until then I am left wondering why would you do something like this? Please find God in the silence of St Monica's. Please do anything but mistreat the world and others in this most shocking manner. You can turn it all around...

St. Monica’s Catholic Church has truly become one of my favorite parishes in the entire country. This remarkable church offers something that’s increasingly rare these days - a beautiful balance between reverent tradition and meaningful community engagement.
Over the years, Father David Guffey has provided amazing spiritual counsel that has deeply enriched my journey. His homilies are thoughtful and accessible, speaking to both the heart and the mind. Whether you’re seeking guidance during challenging times or simply looking to deepen your faith, his pastoral care is exceptional.
The strong leadership under Monsignor Torgerson has been instrumental in creating a welcoming environment where parishioners of all backgrounds feel at home. The church’s programs and ministries reflect this inclusive spirit while maintaining the sacred traditions that make Catholic worship so meaningful.
The parish attracts people from all walks of life - I’ve occasionally run into notable figures like Tom Brady and Arnold Schwarzenegger during services, though I’d hope that wouldn’t be anyone’s primary motivation for attending! What truly matters is the authentic spiritual community you’ll find here.
From the beautiful architecture to the inspiring liturgy, from the warm fellowship to the excellent leadership, St. Monica’s offers everything you could want in a parish home. If you’re in the Santa Monica area and looking for a church community that will nurture your faith while challenging you to grow, this is the place.
Highly recommended for both visitors and those seeking a...
Read moreI grew up Catholic but was 'lapsed' for many years. A few years ago I went on a trip to Belfast Northern Ireland with members from St. Monica's. We went to build houses together with Habitat for Humanity. At the time I was attending Bel Air Pres. All I can say is you learn a lot about someone when traveling together for three weeks. I made new friends from St. Monica's and started attending services. At Good Friday service one year ( BAPC does not offer Good Friday services) I felt as though I was in the presence of the Lord and all the saints. I love St. Monicas... they have embraced me with open arms and I have more new friends in 2 short years than I had in 10 years at Bel Air Pres... though it is also a good church. Friday, after noon mass, there were at least 12-15 of us --all ages from 25 to 80-- doing the Holy Rosary together. I looked around and thought " So this is what it will be like in heaven". People of all ages, young and old, black or white, rich or poor loving God and loving and serving each other.
Under Monsignor Torgerson's leadership, and the solid support of his staff I have learned and grown so much. At least once a week I thank God for bringing me to this church and reconnecting me with my...
