So, I'll start by saying the facilities are great. Excellent selection of equipment, pretty well laid out. If this gym were empty, I'd give it a solid 5/5 no questions asked. The actual gym staff were very nice in all our interactions.
However, my partner and I were frustrated by the clientele. Specifically, at most hours of the day this gym is often times dominated by trainers and their multiple concurrent clients. These "group" fitness programs would occupy entire sections of the gym and multiple pieces of equipment at a time for long periods of time, making it difficult to use those areas of the gym. It always felt as thought they thought they had priority over everyone else and interactions with them were awkward, tense, or flat out rude. Trainers also frequently left equipment set up with weights on them, didn't rerack their weights, or would spread their personal belongings all over the floor near different machines (making it hard to know what they were actually using) and act strange, annoyed or offended if you asked whether they were using something.
The trainers themselves frequently made my partner uncomfortable with their behavior and eye contact, and FREQUENTLY obviously touched or caressed clients in a way that was incredibly inappropriate and unnecessary. As an example, the biggest offender, @RyanThrive (and his devotees), often grabs or holds clients (mostly women) butts, touches and held client's chests, and constantly had to touch or caress his clients on the shoulders, back, waist, and legs during his training sessions every time he is talking to them or passes by them. I really mean it when I say it is constant. It came across as inappropriate flirtatious behavior if not straight up sexual harassment. I guess they must have an agreement about all that between themselves, but, as a fellow gym occupant it seemed very inappropriate and made me and my partner very uncomfortable. This was not unique to this particular trainer, many of the others also did the same.
So, beware if you come here you need to come either at opening or closing times during the week, or early/late on weekend days if you hope to enjoy the gym fully without the flocks of strange Scottsdale "alpha-bro" trainers and their clients. After 6 months we have decided not to renew...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis review is about my experience working with trainer Tiffany LeRoy.
The gym itself is amazing, all the staff are so kind and helpful. The only reason I am giving a 1-star review is because my recent interaction with Tiffany LeRoy. She has been my personal trainer for over a year, and everything had been amazing up until today. I always pay up front for one month of training, sometimes two months, because she insists upon this and makes it her standard. I had to cancel my training because I am moving out of state in a few days. This has been an unexpected move to say the least, and I have MANY unused training sessions which she has refused to give me my upfront payment back for services NOT rendered. Rather, she said that if I want any of my money, I'll have to enroll in her online personalized training!? This does NOT sit well with me. I paid her up front for over a year and I am moving out of state, and she insists on keeping my money for services not rendered...not professional at ALL. Be hesitant of paying trainers up front, especially this one!
She has made a few of the girls upset in the past that I've trained with and now I see why they are no longer training with her.
Note: I see another gentleman wrote similar review about having to cancel for unforeseen circumstances and a trainer deciding to just pocket the money for services unrendered.
Just keep in mind that if any emergencies come up like an illness, force to move, death in the family and you can no longer go - meaning if any LIFE situations come up - and you need to cancel your training before having used your sessions, you will NOT get a dime back.
I do not appreciate having the feeling I'm being taken advantage of especially after spending so much time with someone, let alone money. I've learned a HUGE lesson here.
Unethical & unprofessional business dealings by this trainer! Additionally, she began to grab my arm and stand in front of me as I tried to exit the gym and skip out on my last session, which I was so excited about. I repeatedly told her to stop touching me, but rather than complying, she followed me to my car.
Rant over. Otherwise, Independance Gym is a good...
