When one thinks of the town of Selma, one thinks the railroad and all the rustic, pioneering trappings that that life inspires--yet, not even a block's distance from the town's famed tracks, sits a true hidden gem: Strickland Art Gallery.
A fresh, open space adorned with the bold, bright colors of original art in all shapes and sizes capturing the heart of eastern North Carolina: paintings of the coast, churches, homes, and gardens that remind the soul of simpler times, perhaps those lived in a pastoral lifestyle amidst the pristine nature of the Southern countryside yet grounded in what can only be described as a reverent, beautiful faith filled with humility and love.
And at the back of the studio, the master artist at his desk, gracious and inviting, with a genuine interest in his customers and their stories.
He asked me mine, and I, a local on a daily walk with God amidst a series of days in which my spirit was in the depths of the valley, knew not what to say, except that I was no artist, but a writer at best -- to which the patron said, "Oh, but that is art, and perhaps even braver art."
He then asked what I write, a question I had not been asked in a long time because truth be told, I had forgotten I was a writer.
"Poetry," I replied as he handed me his business card and I made my departure. "I write poetry."
