I have been to this park several times since moving to the area a few years back. It's great for walking dogs as there are expensive walking paths with little off roading trails that my dogs love. There is a surprising amount of water access to what I imagine is Spanaway Lake. It felt pretty warm to my hand the other day, mid August. There were several people swimming and lots of boating activities out farther away. Still super loud though. It's a really big park so even though there are lots of people there, you don't feel on top of each other.
There are 4 different areas, A- D before the road now gets blocked off. I use area B, it seems to be the one for families, picnics, swimming access, where the walking trails are the best, just an area to hang out doing your thing. I think area A might be a special access area? Parking is sort of restricted. Section C looks like the sports area where multiple teams were playing lots of things on designated fields. Section D was maybe another family area but didn't seem to have the space B has and I'm not sure if the trails continue there. I know there's a boat launch somewhere and it might be there?
All in all, it was nice, peaceful, everyone keeping to themselves and enjoying the space and the weather. my dogs got lots of sniffing and marking in and even got chewed out by a squirrel! How exciting!!
O, the reason I took a * off was because this time I had to pay a $3 to get in! Never had to do that before and it was lucky I had the $$ on me. I just don't know that I can stay there long enough to feel like I used $3 worth of whatever, when every other park I...
Read moreFANTASY LIGHTS AT SPANAWAY PARK REVIEW. We visited, on New Years Eve. December 2023. The cool thing is that you can pay for the Fantasy Lights tickets online. We went to buy the tickets and it was a discounted night so we only paid $11. We arrived at the Spanaway Park around 6:30 PM and there was hardly no wait in line at all. I liked the displays and there is even a radio channel you can listen to while driving through. I feel like this is a great activity for just kicking back in the car with your friends, and family, and kids, dog, whoever, and listen to some cheerful Holiday tunes and enjoy each others company! The light display itself is not magnificent, but its still really cool and a lot of work seemed to be put into it. I will definitely be back when my grandkids come and visit me next year at Christmas time. My favorite displays were a jump roping bear and the Sasquatch, and the Santa with his Reindeer, oh- and the motorcycle jump, and the space needle:) I feel like this is a very affordable activity for families to enjoy. 2.5 Miles of lights too. You are instructed to stay in your car and...
Read moreI wish I could review this park higher because over my life I've really enjoyed the fantasy lights exhibit.
but unfortunately, I have to review this park as one star because they are committing major safety violations with the fantasy lights display.
None of the fantasy light displays are protected by a GFCI device, so there is the potential for any of the displays to shock a person if water were to get into the light sockets of any of the bulbs.
The parks department is aware of this because they failed their electrical inspection for the lights this year for a lack of gfci protection.
The parks department has chosen to ignore the notice of violation rather than follow the laws and is actively endangering the public even though there have been officially documented internal memos advising them that this is a life safety issue.
I think it is a shameful that the parks department is willingly ignoring the laws because they think that they can get away with it.
I don't want the fantasy lights display to go away, but it is imperative that they upgrade the electrical equipment that powers it so that it can be...
