Philip Johnson Salon/Spa — Attraction in St. Louis

I am new to the city and chose this salon because of how close it was to my work and home. I initially went in for a haircut and brow wax and decided to come back the following day for bayalage.

I had 100% virgin hair and was very scared of adding color to my hair. My bridal shower was coming up and I really wanted to do something fun and different with my hair. I was ready for a change. However, I think my reservations shined through and were put into heavy consideration as the stylist I was working with ended up doing a very subtle bayalage on my hair. It was so subtle that I could barely tell I had the procedure done. After seeing the results, I was extremely disappointed but didn't say anything and decided to go home to evaluate it further. It didn't take long for me to pick up the phone and call the salon back to express my disappointment. They were very understanding and asked me to come back immediately. After arriving to the salon I was greeted warmly by the manager, Josh. My original stylist had gone home, but Crystal, their senior stylist, volunteered to help me fix my hair. She listened to my concerns and made sure she understood my vision. She was so incredibly professional and knew so much about color and hair! She perfected my hair and I was very pleased with the results. Both Crystal and Josh kept the place open for me until 9:30 pm!! I could tell they were tired but they put me first and made me feel welcome in their salon. I highly recommend this salon and will definitely be going back for future services. I've been to this salon a few times now and I liked it from the moment I walked in.

My request for balayage didn't go as desired at first. I have very thick, curly, extreme hair. It is anything but easy to work with. Josh is so understanding and attentive and had me come back the very next day for a consultation with a different stylist, Shonda. We were able to do a couple minor fixes right then that majorly improved the overall look and come to an agreement for next week to have the full of what I should have done ☺️ I was nervous about getting a fair offer given experiences in the past at other places but it wasn't even a debate with Josh. He clearly cares for his clients.

Shonda has my full trust. She has been practicing all her years and understands my thick and even frizzy hair. It was no problem for her to tone down a couple parts that already make a big difference. She also listens to what your desires are - and wants to hear it all at least twice 😉 She is passionate about what she does but makes sure to go by your vision. Love that about her as well as her comforting nature.

I would encourage this place is worth the time and money. The prices are better than most overrated salons around. I will always tip 20% anywhere I go but the prices here allow me to tip this amazing staff a little better when I can. It is a salon worth having patience with as well and finding your person here because every person is so friendly, and the manager will absolutely work with you to provide the level of service they clearly are about. UPDATE: Excellent service - The best hair salon in St.Louis! My stylist Alec is very talented and he does amazing job on my hair.

They use Aveda products - wonderful!

Their hair wash station is the most comfortable I've ever seen. Those chairs won't hurt your neck.

They also have Aveda goodie bags for new customers!

My previous review: I have been cursed until today, couldn’t find a trustworthy & talented stylist in StL and realized they were overcharging me. So, I gave PJ Salon a shot.

First of all, they use Aveda products. I love it. After getting a full color/root touch up, hair blowout is free! I wish they dried my hair all the way though. And I wish they cleaned the dark color dye from my hairline and my face.:/ I didn’t notice until I looked at home.

Also, first timers get an Aveda goodie bag with free products and their pricing card inside! I love they are transparent about it too.

Mini heads-up: Their street parking is not free, even on weekends.

More Details: I have long hair, I prefer single process hair color. Since my hair is long, it is high maintenance.

Today, my stylist Alec took his time to do a full hair color that I requested. Unlike other hair salons I’ve been to, he actually used a brush to do it. I love that.

Alec was very helpful, he answered all of my questions, explained things about the process and kept me updated about their pricing. (He only added an extra bowl of color since my hair is long and I think it is understandable.)

After the job is done, first I thought it was too dark. I followed his advice about it, and now I am satisfied with the results. And I paid way under what I was paying for the same job at...
