I’ve been a loyal customer at Hong Kong Supermarket in Tacoma for years, shopping weekly for supplies for my food business. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars here each month. But a few weeks ago, I had an experience that left me stunned and deeply hurt.
While checking out, the cashier gestured to my yellow reusable shopping bag—which contained items I’d purchased earlier in the day at Walmart—and asked, “Are you going to pay for the stuff in your bag though?” I was confused at first, then realized he was implying I was stealing. I explained that I came in with the bag and even lifted it to show him. His response? “I’m sorry, you just never know.”
I’ve never seen other customers—predominantly Asian shoppers—questioned in this manner, even when they have reusable bags in their carts. The implication was clear, and it felt like racial profiling.
I left the store feeling a mix of sadness, anger, and humiliation. After gathering my thoughts outside and near tears, I returned to request a refund for my purchases. The deli counter staff apologized and processed the refund, but the damage was done. I haven’t been back since.
I’m sharing this because it’s important to call out these experiences. No one should be made to feel like a suspect while shopping, especially in a place they’ve supported loyally. I hope this leads to reflection and change within the...
Read moreI am not buying anything here anymore. Years ago I was poison by fish and stopped eating it but my friend suggested this place as a fresh fish spot. Yesterday however, I was sold fish that was spoiled. I brought it back and after 30 mins of going back and forth about me not bringing my receipt, I found my receipt, and exchanged the fish for more fish of the same kind but different ones, the supervisor was nice enough about it, but the lady preparing the fish in back was really rude and was yelling across the store in her language saying that I looked at it before purchasing because she didn’t want to change it. They still had my money from the previous transaction and I told them I didn’t want the spoil one but they didn’t want to change it, so I went home with one spoiled fish and one good fish in the same bag.
I have brought whole jackfruits that weren’t good from this store, never returned it but, I have two babies under 2 who loves fish and I would hate for bad fish to poison them, so I threw out the bad one and had to suffer the lost. The lady in the back is really rude and I won’t be supporting anywhere that gives...
Read moreTheir prices are cheaper than other Asian markets in the area but shady service. There was a customer yelling and calling people names in the store and none of the employees help to resolve the situation. There was at least 3 employees who saw what was happening but did nothing. They just watch her yelled, screamed, cussed at other customers and then even went through through the checkout line. It was a scary experience when I visited. My mom came here to shop and when she asked for their annual free new year calendar, the clerk said, "they are out". However, my mom saw someone who shop AFTER her coming out with a free calendar and a full cart. Hmm, it would have been nicer if they were honest with her about how much you have to spend to get a "free" calendar but that is really off putting. Overall, it was unsafe/scary experience for me. Maybe their company should consider safety measurements for other customers and work on their fairness/service when they really only have have "free" things for customer who pay a certain amount. That is very shady, unfair, and uncool to be caught in a lie...
