I just learned the school is closing. I attended the school in 1988 for Mechanical Drafting...at the time it was for traditional drafting...yes, on the slanted tables using paper, pencils, T-squares and triangles. It was one of the best places to go for drafting and was well known among the industries that employed their graduates (Grumman, Raytheon and many other defense contractors). Keep in mind, in the 80's getting a job with those employers was like hitting the lottery. At the time, the school was just beginning to roll out CAD traing programs and acknowledged the future of drafting will be CAD - but the current environment in the industry was still very much traditional hand-drafting. I did get a drafting job but due to that type of drafting being phased-out, I ended up working as an electrician and then designing low voltage, network and data systems for the same electrical firm. I came full circle and as part of my design job offered to go back to Island Drafting at night to learn AutoCAD, which my employer thought was a good idea and paid for. While I was never employed solely for CAD work, my design jobs had me using it often and to this day 37 years later I use AutoCAD regularly. Sad to see it close. The school was very good and I remember Mr. DiLiberto always being a visible presence at the school. The staff were all industry veterans and the classes were small and personal.
