Kirwan's has no competition in it's nitch anywhere nearby, so it's difficult to compare them to much. It's a great place to get together with friends and play some games. Most of us have limitations on how much space and how large our tables are. Kirwan's has tons of both, so if you wanted to play a game of D&D with a hundred or so of your closest friends, you can do that.
The store is in two distinct sides, a gaming store, and a large game playing area.
They are very relaxed on the gaming side. No one minds if you eat and you aren't required to purchase anything or pay a fee to play there. As long as you respect the space no one will bother you. Within a single block of the store you have a couple of good options for food. I like the local Chinese place, personally. The new Cafe is also really good.
The store is very cool. They have a huge selection of tabletop games, as well as video games, comics, and various other geeky fun things. You can probably find prices slightly cheaper online, but not much, and the small difference is well worth it simply to be able to play immediately. Supporting a seriously cool and one of a kind (without driving very, very far) place is a happy afterthought.
Despite having no competition. Kirwan's takes the high road and provides a good value and a great space without asking much of it's patrons. It's one of very few stores left where I actually feel welcome being there.
Go get some nerdy friends together, head over to Kirwan's, pick out a game and play to your hearts content. It's a great way to spend an hour or...
Read moreI've just arrived home from my first ever YGO Regional event and I loved the store, and if they host another one in the future I will absolutely make the 3 hour drive to and from again.
I, a first time Regional participant who, took off work weeks ahead, who pre registered online and arrived 11 minutes before 10am (when the event was supposed to start) didn't find out until 40 minutes later (when the event actually started) and my name wasn't in the round one pairings that there was a check in process and I would be given an ENTIRE round 1 loss, I was honestly crushed.
In the 50 minutes I sat in the store before round 1 pairings went up I wish someone with any authority would've said to me that they didn't have a filled out decklist from me or that I had to register a second time on a piece of paper for some reason, even though I registered online weeks ago.
I could've taken a photo of my already made decklist off an app for deck checks and filled out the form after.
I went home winning 3 matches against players, losing 4 matches against players, and losing 1 match to nothing.
I would've loved the chance to go home 4-4 at least.
I guess for the next guy since this will NEVER happen to me again, I'd just ask for more leniency, and maybe more effort from staff like multiple LOUD calls for check in, and maybe LOUD reminders for participants to make sure they've submitted their decklists.
Volume is important in an event of 256 people, a megaphone would be cool. All of that aside thank you for...
Read moreHaving owned a comic/gaming store and being a gamer myself I guess I expect a lot from a retail location but in this industry it is never a shock to be greeted with disdain and indifference into a dingy, uncomfortable setting which has been the majority of my experience over the years. That being said, Kirwan's Game Store is anything but. First the selection is astounding, especially for Magic ( though a few more options for sleeves and deck boxes would be nice and it would be wicked if there were Heroclix but oh well, they make up for it in every other way) The service is fantastic, no serious, I am not kidding they are friendly, super helpful and have my loyalty after only two visits. The store itself is clean, well organized, with a large room for gaming itself. The Magic binders are well organized and have everything from Coldsnap to Gatecrash and even older. If you're looking for gaming this is the place, now if they only sold my comic subscriptions I would...
