We visited Storm King Sculpture Center late September and it was a magical time! We visited during a particularly beautiful day, and walked almost 5 miles around the grounds and didn’t even cover everything! The space was very well thought out, which is amazing considering the undertaking of this massive space with massive sculptures. There was enough room to maintain personal space, and have an intimate experience despite some larger groups there.
My only criticism would be to integrate the more geometric sculptures made with steel girders With more organic sculptures, so you didn’t have to walk as far to see a “slice” of what the sculpture grounds had to offer.
The placement of some of the sculptures played with your eye- not being able to tell of one was resting on another or the depth away from each other. One of my favorite sculptures was by George Cutts (which was a beautiful in motion sculpture) that we happened upon toward the end of our visit. I wish that and those similar were integrated more with the other types of static sculptures.
All in all- the place was impeccably clean, well thought out, bathroom access (even during Covid) was ample during our 5 mile walk throughout the place, and there were many places to sit and rest, have a snack and look around. We can’t wait to...
Read moreI was so-so about kayaking in general. Sure, I had paddled around lakes and oceans, but always thought it a little boring. Real kayakers were the ones going over waterfalls and through rapids. Anything else was an expensive nature walk--a good option for sore feet. But, last night was AMAZING. Being in a small group allowed us to have some flexibility and James was very willing to accommodate. After paddling a mile or so across the wide Hudson (or "Mahicantuck," a Lenape name for river that runs both ways) we traveled around Bannerman's Castle island, while James told us about the man. Then before the sun went down, we went back across to watch the sunset, while the full moon (the Strawberry moon) rose between two mountain peaks. As the tide came in we went beneath the trestle and into the Moodna marsh where we watched beavers swim to and fro under the misty water. It was something I'll...
Read moreFor a first time Kayaker, Storm King Adventure tours was OUTSTANDING! Each staff member was knowledgeable about every aspect of their job both on and off the water. The guides made the experience truly one of a kind. Aiden, had such a great personality! You could tell he absolutely loved what he does, and was so considerate about keeping everyone at a steady pace no matter their skill level. Kyle was a super organized individual, with a great strength in communication. He demonstrated procedures before hand efficiently and effectively. Utilizing his knowledge of both the water and kayaking was very helpful in making it across smoothly and securely. And lastly Cole was a good helping hand to his coworkers and all the individuals on the tour. Would most definitely be visiting for another tour! Wouldn’t want to be on the water...
