This is a great location for a walk or jog. Iv’e been here several times both alone or with others. If you live in the Bronx and have a car this is easily accessible. There is a large (by City folk standards) central lake which is surrounded by woods. There is a main trail (with a few small off shoots winding off from it) that extends around the lake. It’s a nice leisurely paced walk among tall trees and a LOT of fallen timber, branches and chainsawed blocks of wood. It is quiet except for various plentiful birdsong. The trail can require some attention in spots due to thick knotty snaking tree roots underfoot and jutting outcroppings of rock. However, overall this is an extremely easy walkable trail suitable for children and adults that isn’t strenuous. The entire circumference is over one mile perhaps close to two. The lake is populated by mallards, geese, swans and white cranes as well as turtles. I do not know if it’s stocked with fish. Either way there is no fishing allowed here which in any event would be extremely difficult to get close enough to the waterline due to thick trees and underbrush. Only a handful of spots are walkable down to the waterline. There are no large wildlife here such as deer. About half way around there is a an offshoot walkway that seems to extend underneath the Henry Hudson Parkway (which is adjacent to this place as you walk around the lake by its midpoint.) I don’t know where that path extends as I’ve never walked it. I think joggers use it, though. Many of the people frequenting this trail I think are locals from the surrounding upscale affluent Eastchester neighborhood. The lake and wooded area is directly next to an equestrian club. The parking area is to the left of this horse farm. It can be easily missed. I believe you can ask the owner to look at the horses if you have young children. You cannot bring a stroller into the paddocks or area as staff say they spook the horses and could present a danger. Walkers around the lake are friendly and will generally greet you. There are people walking their dogs (park require that all dogs be leashed) and individuals on mountain bikes (although signs at Park’s entrance expressly prohibit bicycle riding on the trail or in the park) and occasional neighborhood older kids hanging out. However, the majority of the times I’ve frequented this Park it is peaceful and tranquil. A great oasis away from the Bronx. Being someone who identifies as an Upstate New Yorker I’m always seeking out places like this that don’t require lengthy drives to find solace and nature from the urban cacophony that is the Bronx. Places that have a serene gentility and can center us back to being human beings rather than urban jungle animals (or provide some escape and relief from those constantly around us.) This is a great locale for this as well as a way to get some low impact exercise and conversation with friends or family while you walk. Also, a nice way to get a little closer with your children. Of note, there is a very large almost flat topped boulder across the lake visible when you are alongside the length that borders the Parkway. Locals or frequenters know to bring foldable camp chairs or blankets and sit there for awhile to look out upon the lake and simply enjoy your surroundings and let nature soothe your mind and soul. But, I have yet to find the offshoot trail that leads there, LOL! Through the trees and across the lake I can see the boulder and occasionally people sitting there. I’d love to eventually find it! Be aware that this is a “Carry In-Carry Out” Nature Park. So, do not bring anything with you that will be discarded as garbage in these woods. Keep it the same way it was before you visited. Be respectful and appreciative of this place as they are few and far in between near the Bronx to escape to. Also, the neighborhood is very quiet and residential- be mindful and comport yourself accordingly. Park closes at dusk. During this time of year (very early spring) there is no foliage upon the trees or in the woods so, for some that may...
Read moreThis is a review of the pros and cons of this park. This park is only suitable for trail walking, fishing, and observing wildlife observation and is not suitable for picnics, bbqs, and just plain sitting
Pros
Park is very clean considering it is a public park. Yes their is litter but not that much of it. Entry is free no passes needed There is a horse stable if you wish to ride a horse. Very few people Their is wildlife such as white tail deer, red tailed hawks, and varies bird species and small mammal species to observe. Lake has largemouth bass, panfish, and probably pickerel The area is very clean and very safe very upscale neighborhood
Cons
Very ill suited for anything other then walking, horseback riding, and fishing. Tons of insects such as mosquitoes and ticks check yourself once you get home Some parts of the trail smell bad due to the smell of horse manure because their is a nearby stable. This barely effects the trail and is a tiny nuisance. No picnic tables and no open flames Bad for old people, people who can not walk considerably distances, and people who are lazy. No record breaking bass
I would return again it was fun but I am definitely going to back bug...
Read moreGreat place to run or walk your dog or just go for a walk if you don’t want to drive too far. It’s pretty flat so it won’t tax most people. If you are looking for more of a nature experience there are some trails that hug the lake away from the Hutchinson River Parkway although no trail maps or trail signs. If you cross the bridge over exit ramp on South end you will be in the Nature Study woods which is similar but much less lake - there is a little lake that hugs the Hutchinson River Parkway which you can get to off the main trail south. I’ve seen many Blue Heron at different times. In the past I’ve seen a very wide range of wild life, but in the past few years it’s been mostly deer. I used to run in the morning before the sun came up with a headlamp and when I looked in the woods along the path I would see dozens of deer eyes staring back at me glowing blue - initially eerie but it became soothing - there is no danger if the deer are happy to...
