The theater's latest children's show was a delightful spectacle filled with enchanting performances, dazzling costumes, and engaging storytelling that captivated the young audience from start to finish. However, the production's perplexing decision to use gender-neutral they/them pronouns for a clearly male character left many parents, myself included, feeling blindsided and deeply unsettled. As a result, what should have been a magical family outing turned into an unexpected and unwelcome teachable moment about complex gender identity issues that most young children are simply not developmentally ready to grapple with. While the talented cast delivered their lines flawlessly, hearing them constantly refer to this character as "they" and "them" was jarring and distracted from the flow and comprehension of the story for these young viewers still learning the basics of language and grammar. I couldn't help but feel that the theater overstepped its role by unilaterally injecting this sensitive and nuanced topic into a children's production without any forewarning to parents, who should have the right to choose how and when to broach these mature subjects with their own children based on their unique family values and each child's level of maturity. After many years of joyful holiday memories at this establishment, I left feeling betrayed, saddened and uncertain if we'll ever return. What a shame that this baffling artistic choice tainted an otherwise wonderful show and has likely put an end to a cherished...
Read moreMy Pop Pop was my best friend growing up. He loved Bing Crosby... his favorite song was White Christmas. My mom and I always like to go out and do something nice for Christmas. It has become a tradition over the years.
For the past two years my mom has been battling breast cancer so we could not get together. This year I was excited to see the John Engeman Theater in Northport is showing the play White Christmas. Did I mention mom loves musical plays?
This theater is named after John Engeman a Army Combat Veteran who lost his life fighting for our freedoms and country. The same freedoms this theater took away from me when I asked if I could provide a negative COVID test bc I chose not to be vaccinated. I have had COVID, I have antibodies, no underlying conditions, I am young and healthy.
I have attended many plays at this theater, with my nieces, mom and dad. We have made some wonderful memories there over the years that I cherish. As a Marine Corps Combat Veteran who also like John fought for this country... I am truly disgusted and disappointed in this venue. I do love Northport and I did love this theater. You support Veterans, but you don't support Veterans to make their own health decisions. I'm dishearted to have to write and...
Read moreI am from East Northport and can remember going to the Northport movie theater many a times. It was always the “cheep” theater playing the movies that has been out for some time, It was not anything special but I when the movie theaters with a balcony was starting to disappear going to Northport movies was like going to the home of an old friend. And it was a great deal for less that a $1 till the early 80’s when admission was set at a $1
I am a big fan of Broadway but as my health issues have now put me into a wheelchair and my wife is visually impaired we do not get into the city as much as we would like.
My wife is a huge Gloria Estefan fan, having seen her in concert five times. We had even seen On Your Feet on Broadway and when it came to Northport I made a call to the theater so see if the theater was accessible. I am happy to say it is and the show was great!!
We had a great time the John W Emgeman Theater it is not the old movie house from my youth. There is a bar there for good drinks and snacks ( no popcorn but that’s ok) Sadly the balcony is gone but from the valet parking, the people that work there (note to management take care of your employees for Christmas) I know we will be back to see other shows...
