The content of the museum is very diverse, unique, vast and interesting, but it's also extremely dusty (you might want to wear a mask while you're in there). The tram ride is nice, but the recorded narration track for the tour was out of sinc some of the time. Especially when sitting in the very back of the vehicle. From that vantage point, some of the musical exhibits weren't easily viewed or heard when the tour guide activated them. That was disappointing. The colder weather also negatively impacted the mechanical functions of some of the musical pieces (that's understandable - many are very old and rare collector pieces). There doesn't seem to be any other option to view the collection in the large "toy box" section of the museum (i.e. you can't go through it on foot). So, I asked if I could take the tram ride a 2nd time, in order to catch some of the details I missed the 1st time around. I was told it would cost an additional $5 to ride through again (and that was if any spaces were available - timed tram tickets are typically reserved online ahead of time). The tram moves very slowly, but that's a plus since there's so much to take in. It would be nice if visitors could walk through and take more selective photos at their own pace (though I understand that's probably not practical having people walking all around in there. Especially with an active tram moving through). The "music room" section of the museum is done on foot. So, pacing through there wasn't an issue and it was very easy to be selective about your photo choices. The entire visit took me about 90 minutes to check out everything (and I tend to go very slowly). The general admission was $18 (which included access to the "music room" and "antique truck exhibit" next to the "toy box", but only one tram ride, as mentioned above). The gift shop was rather sparce and the snack choices were very limited. I would like to mention that the staff was very nice and the rest room was...
Read moreI see some dissatisfied reviews, and I think that's ok. People should understand that it may be a museum in name, but this is more of a collection by one person before anything else. I say that to say, imagine you amassed such a vast collection from having the financial means, and needed a whole factory building just to store your collection. Then imagine charging people to see your personal collection because this also helps maintain and pay people to make sure it's upheld, but it also allows people to experience things you found interesting, odd, or you just wanted it for an unknown reason. Well, that's what this place is. Someone's personal collection, and you are allowed to see it.
It is fascinating to see the way things were before my time, restored, and displayed in such a way that allows me to view them. I only rated 4 stars because, overall, there could be improvements. And I dont mean the stuff, because, it is hard to fix some of this older stuff for so many reasons. Personally, I found some of it to be repetitive and not in my wheelhouse of interest. I say that because there are lots of doll like and things that seem like they were just there to make certain areas feel more massive. But there were many other parts that didn't appear this way.
In any case, it is very worth seeing and I think you should take the time if you are a person who is interested in the past and ever wanted to see someone's collection who just has a lot of stuff over time. That's what this is, and I think it was pretty cool. I mean, there's a tram inside. I do agree with another reviewer who said they wish it was a little more open to you learning about the stuff in the collection. In particular, the musical organs, cars, and other memorablia. That also was part of the reason...
