This our favorite nearby trail to walk our dog! The flat gravel paths are very wide along the river so there's plenty of room for runners, walkers, and bikers to get by each other. Half of the trail is through the woods so there is a lot of tree coverage and shade.
During the week parking isn't too bad but on weekend, anticipate it being hard to find a spot. There is another lot across the bridge. Parking is $5 (pay on an app) or you can purchase a yearly pass for $40 (better value you if you come at least once a month). There are restrooms right next to the parking lot at the start of the trail as well as doggy bag stations throughout the trail. Do your part and clean up after your dogs!
If you do a "full" loop on the main gravel path, it is a little over 3 miles. This trail also connects to Bob Callan Trail if take the paved path under the bridge as well as bike trails in the woods. There are many look out "docks" along the river with benches to admire the Chattahooche for turtle and...
Read moreCochran shoals is a site of Atlanta’s favorite Chattahoochee river, which has a very long strip of trail. This is located on an urban side of the city but one can’t find it easily from the street. It’s a beautiful place to hike and walk and get some fresh air, peace and marvelous nature. It has parking lot which is usually available during week days and little busy during weekends. The longer strip runs along the river so you can see and hear the blissful sounds of rapids running down fast. The other trail goes inside the swamps and little dense. People can also come for outing here with kids as benches are there and few decks are there towards the river side. Bikes are also available for renting. All and all a very feasible and calm place to exercise and walk even after your office hours. Sometimes to get to see some...

My first run was an easy 8-mile run from Cochran Shoals Unit - Interstate North (Eugene Gunby Rd) to Johnson Ferry (along Columns Dr SE) and back. It starts as a packed gravel trail and runs into another parking lot (Cochran Shoals Unit - Columns) and becomes road. There is also access to other trails (Cochran Shoals Trail and Sope Creek Trail from points along this route. There are well-maintained restrooms and water fountains at the parking lots...
