I went in to buy 10 Booster packs for Magic the Gathering for my Brother’s birthday. He comes to play Magic here regularly and does the Draft here every Friday evening.
When I explained to the employee (sorry I don't remember your name...) what I wanted, he suggested that I buy a package of Magic cards that came with 10 Booster packs and some other cool stuff for less than what the 10 packs would have cost me! Unreal, right?
The guy could have easily sold me what I asked for and I would have been happy to have unknowingly paid more money for exactly what I came in to buy for my Brother. But he didn't. He asked me some questions about who I was buying the booster packs for and what kind of set he was collecting for. Then he told me about this really cool package that came with 10 booster packs, was less expensive than just buying the booster packs outright, and that had just been released!
I want to be clear that he didn't try to "up-sell" me, he knew a lot more about the game than I do (which really doesn’t say much. As I know next to nothing about it), and really helped me make a much more informed purchase tailored to the set my Brother was trying to build. So, I ended up buying something that was much better than what I had come in for!
Needless to say, my Brother was extremely impressed and happy about the set I gave him for his birthday!
Thanks for the help! I also have bought many board games that are difficult to find here. Really cool place.
The only thing that I wish they carried is a selection of action figures and comic books to go along with everything they sell.
I've been looking for some specific action figures and I can't find them. The guy who helped me did give me a good place to go and check out at the mall. But, I really don't like malls... I may go there anyway.
Thanks again for what you guys do to help us Newbs buy cooler gifts for people who are really into things we aren’t! I will definitely be back. The education I got, along with the recommendations for different locations to get stuff that I am super into, but they don’t carry has won them a new and loyal customer!
If I can get the name of the employee who helped me, I’ll edit and give a shout out m. Again, I really appreciate you...

Hello,
Please pass on to your staff what a great team I think you have there. I live near another popular game store in San Diego but I am wiling to make the extra drive (time & money) to your store. I just don't feel they offer the personal attitude / effort that you do. I am new to board gaming and don't like to be looked down upon by employees because I'm not a "hardcore" gamer.
One of your employees (name?) is a great example. My son (10) and I came in to purchase one of the games we saw on Table Top videos. We bought King of Tokyo and he INVITED us to sit at a table to figure it out, he offered to come by and answer any questions. It was great.
I really look forward to learning the game that we bought today.
Thank you for your time,
Mark.
...Just today (7/5/13) I drove up from San Diego to take advantage of the email newsletter discount and upon entering a VERY busy store (Friday night tournaments) one of the employees (Richard?) quickly looked out and said "welcome back! How did you like the _ game you purchased a few weeks ago?". "I hope my explanation helped a little". It did, but more importantly I felt good about my recent purchase as the employee was sharing his passion for gaming with me, though maybe not in the same genre.
One of the few stores I am glad to support ie.. pay full retail (no online, deep-pocket, big chain discounts). I'm happy to pay a few more dollars to support a great local business. Especially a non-chain store business.
Fair prices Great selection Membership club actually has great deals! Passionate / friendly staff
A++
Thanks for showing my family some...
Read moreBeen 3yrs since last review. Went through an entire pandemic and Pair a Dice is going strong. Love this place for all things Magic, Pokemon, boardgames, D&D, and all around haven for things fun.
First and foremost I want to thank Pair A Dice Games for the generous donation to Calavera Middle School Magic The Gathering Club! They donated a large collection of Magic the Gathering cards so that kids whom might not be able to afford cards or decks could build decks. I can't emphasize how much it has helped the club. Secondly, Pair A Dice Games supported the local Magic the Gathering community. By supporting this club they are supporting the next generation of Magic players. This is the truest definition of a Local Game Store (LGS). Lastly, they went above and beyond providing cards from a lot of different sets not just the bulk from the most recent sets and believe me kids notice. I have used the free Introductory decks that come out every year that LGS's pass out. They are generic and kids often are playing against someone with literally the same cards in both decks. By providing diversity of cards they are enhancing these kids experience and in our digital age with kids planting their faces into screens Pair A Dice Games has, by supporting the Magic the Gathering club, taken a clear role of helping kids continue to have real interactions with their peers. Please visit this store, which by the way, not only supports the Magic the Gathering community they support many other games and interactive gaming communities. Calavera Hills Middle School...
