Beat the rainy day blues in Boston, wirh a trip to the Lyman Estate Greenhouse in Waltham, MA. It’s free (suggested donation of $5) and an instant mood-lifter! #Boston #HiddenGems #bougainvillea #flowers #greenhouse #historicnewengland #spring

The Lyman Estate is such a hidden gem in Waltham! Nicole was lovely to work with a so helpful answering our questions and sharing her expertise. Lyman Estate was the perfect venue for our New England fall wedding with so many spaces for beautiful photos. We absolutely LOVED the estate and were so happy with how our wedding day turned out. I was initially worried that guests would be put off by the different rooms for dinner, but it actually felt like a very intimate and cozy dinner party which was exactly the vibe we were hoping for and many of our guests remarked on how unique this setup was from other weddings. One other thing to note is that Waltham has a law limiting the bar to only be open for 4 hours which I was also initially concerned about but guests didn’t seem to mind. (Photos by Kelly Benvenuto)

Tough to review this estate and historic home. The building is lovely and wonderfully maintained, but it's nearly empty of furnishings or any real sense of history and personality. That's because it seems the primary purpose of the home is to host weddings and other events, so most rooms are either empty or contain modern furniture or catering equipment. The tour was just OK, our guide jumped around a lot in the narrative history and seemed unsure of a lot of the facts about the estate. On the positive side the greenhouse was very cool, fully operational with many plants being grown. The grounds looked like they would be nice to walk in the spring (we visited on a winter weekend with snow on the ground). With so many other historic homes in the region I'd put this one lower on the list.

As an avid fan of the classic story of Little Women, I was delighted to find out that one of the filming locations for the newest movie rendition of the story was done at this location. I was also delighted to find out that this estate was open to the public through their website. Nowhere online or on any signs outside did it list that the venue was closed. Therefore, it was quite displeasing when my family and I were simply admiring and photographing the property from the grass and were chased off by a woman saying it was closed for a wedding. We happily understood and were leaving when the women felt the need to add a comment on how we should make sure to clean after our dog on our way out. Our dog hadn't even used the bathroom, and if he did we were prepared to clean it up with the dog bags we keep on us at all times. The comment was completely unnecessary. For future book and movie lovers who are making the special trip to your location under the impression that you are open, make it known on your website when you are opened or are closed (or at least a sign at the front) and please be more polite when asking...

The Lyman Estate was a perfect venue for our wedding! We got married in June 2023 and the grounds were absolutely stunning! All the flowers and dogwood trees were in full bloom and it made such a great photo backdrop! The inside of the house is well-suited for hosting a smaller ceremony (we had 50 guests) and reception, as the ballroom and adjacent rooms are beautiful as well. If looking for a larger wedding, the outside is plenty spacious to have a tent if needed!!

Aside from the aesthetics of the venue, working with the venue coordinator, Nicole, was so great! She helped in so many ways (coordinating with vendors, day-of timeline management, helping setup decorations prior to arrival) and really did all she could to make our day as stress free as possible. She has a wealth of knowledge for what works best in the venue but is also open to new approaches (a lot of coordinators are very much not open to new approaches, so this is a big plus).

Overall, would recommend this venue to anyone looking to get married in the area. We shopped around a lot in eastern Mass. and this was by far the best...

Imagine this: you get married in between two beautiful flowering dogwood trees in front of all of your friends and family before retiring to the reception in a historic, and restored mansion near Boston. It's not a dream, you can do this, and you should.

Nicole & Historic New England were fantastic in helping us plan our day, give us access to the greenhouses for photos, and allow us to design the wedding day we wanted. From the ceremony in the dogwood grove, to the cocktail hour and speeches on the lawn and porch, to the dinner and reception in the historic mansion - it was the best day. Nicole was so easy to work with on the day of, and all of the planning before. During the wedding day, despite some early day rain, she almost 'willed' sunshine into existence as she proclaimed, "none of my outdoor weddings have been rained out".

If you're looking for a special, historic, and semi-formal to formal experience, I would HIGHLY recommend the...
