Techcycle Solutions Electronics Recycling — Attraction in Waltham

I dropped off 3 computers, a laptop from the 20th century (!), a newer laptop and a desktop tower. I had been holding onto these old devices for way longer than I wanted to because despite there being places to drop off devices for recycling, there wasn't any place locally I could find that would reliably destroy the hard drive/data. The couple behind Techcycle Solutions was very friendly. They started taking apart my devices immediately upon receiving them unlike large companies that just put your old device in a pile and you need to hope that pieces are recycled and that your data is protected. We didn't know what to do with all the old electronic stuff we had accumulated over the years. Computers, stereo, telephones, printers -- we didn't want to throw it out, but..., where to take it? Then my wife saw Michael at the Belmont Farmers' Market -- he was friendly and helpful, we got his card, and today we dropped off a full carload of stuff.

It was a pleasure meeting him -- we learned that he's supplementing his day job (IT and teaching basic computer skills at the high school) with this electronics recycling business. He explained that some of the newer stuff could be re-purposed, but much of it would be salvaged for materials (gold, copper, etc) -- much better than the landfill!

Such an easy and feel-good process! Techcycle Solutions took a bunch of my old and nonworking electronics that had been collecting dust and recycled them all for free. No landfills and no guilt. I chose to pay the nominal fee of $4 to have hard drives shredded and recycled, which gave me more peace of mind than just doing a factory reset or trusting that the "broken laptop" really was broken.
