This is one of my favorite 1861 US Civil Insurrection forts. It's got cool trails, it's got a plaque, it's got an old water fountain, and it's even got an old outdoor theater to put on outdoor Shakespeare plays, it's called the Sylvan theater and it ran from 1930 to the 1960s, till they took the trolley trains out. In fact if you look at the exit on the North side, Someone saved one of the trolley train rails and stuck it in the dirt and it's pointing up as a souvenir from the trolley days. The trolley tracks are under all the roads, they were paved over. Some were taken up but most were just paved over. All these trails in the plaque, and the theater were all put up by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, take a moment to remember them and thank them as you walk through this lovely park. This fort did not take part in the Battle of Fort stevens, it was a couple miles out of range from their artillery.

Seems like it would have been a fun place to hike and explore but we were already tired from hiking yesterday.

A little slice of nature in NE; deer and chipmunks abound on this historical site.

Back in the 50's when DC had one of those rare good snowfalls and schools closed, we would use our flipped over Flexi-Flyer sleds to pack a sledding trail down the hill in this park. We also enjoyed sledding down 14th Street hill from the Franciscan Monastery to Bunker Hill School. Then about 10 of us would grab a hold of someone's bumper who was trying to drive up the hill until he spun out on the ice, spotted us in his rear view mirror and chewed us out! We built snow forts for snowball battles on the green in front of the Holy Name College. I lived at 1337 Ritchie Place from birth to age 10 years. Photo of me and older brothers. I'm in my Buster Brown collar and flight suit. Neighborhood terrors...

I grew up t two blocks from this park. My friends and I felt like this was our personal playground. The number 12 boys club would practice in this park also. Tha annual soup box was on Eastern Ave each year. There is not much on the park except a few picnic tables but for us as young kids in the sixties it was a wonderful place. Even now at sixty five years old l live 5 minutes from the park and ride past it at least once a week. ...
