I recently finished up my first 6-week hand building class led by the studio owner, Makeda - hands down one of the best creative experiences I’ve had in DC. We worked on several projects that gradually challenged our handbuilding skills while learning the basics and I had so much fun during each class. Makeda loves what she does, makes class fun, and helps you troubleshoot the designs you create so you can really build your vision out. 10/10 would recommend and I plan on taking more classes in the future. Bonus points - unlike other studios in the city, this one is easily metro accessible!

My partner and I took a workshop making Christmas ornaments and I had so much fun that I came back to take a class. Makeda is a wonderful and patient teacher. She is clearly passionate about what she does and really encourages everyone to tap into their inner artist. She makes the vibes of the class very friendly, fun, and low pressure--and she always has great music playing. Workshops are perfect for dates. The classes are great for being in a creative and generative safe space and committing to learning more about the medium.

We took an intro class at Sio for our anniversary, and we had the most amazing time! We learned so much, had SO much fun, the owner/instructor Makeda is vibrant and amazing and such a blast - cannot recommend this enough as a date night or new hobby. It’s also located in such a fun, cute area of DC, so it’s the perfect way to make a night of it in the city and try something fun and new!

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Makeda at Sio Ceramics to create over 100 plates for my wedding, and I truly can’t recommend her enough! From start to finish, she was incredibly communicative, supportive, and generous with her time and knowledge.

Makeda is not only a talented ceramicist but also a wonderful teacher—her passion for her craft and the success of her students shines through in everything she does. The studio itself is such a warm, welcoming environment. Whether you're looking to take a class, pursue a personal project, or explore ceramics for the first time, this is the place.

Makeda goes above and beyond to create space (literally and figuratively!) for creativity and community. I’m so grateful for the experience and would recommend Sio...

I had a fantastic time working with Makeda for a Black History Month program where we hosted several Black-owned businesses to be vendors at our university . She was incredibly communicative and professional but most importantly for us, she was kind and so interactive with our students. They not only had the opportunity to purchase from her selection of beautifully made ceramic pieces, but get to know her and learn about her experience as an entrepreneur.

I look forward to working with her again in the future and would not hesitate to recommend her for...
