I’m a mexicana y chicana traveling from out of state. I’ve been here for two days & have ran into almost every Latino you can think of, aside from Mexican. I was excited to come here & to feel the presence of mi gente, pero la neta que el ambiente y sabor de cultura que me ofrecieron aquí era muy gabacha. Somehow the building has several people in it, yet no one in there is humble enough to even saludarte. I have never seen Mexicans & Mexican culture depicted in such a classist, flavorless, & prejudice way. They literally refer to indigenous populations as peasants in their text descriptions. I’ve never been ashamed of being Mexican but being in this building was the closest I’ve felt. Read moreGreat place to visit! If you like architecture and old/historical designs, this is the place to go! It has wonderful murals and a nice library with old books! The Mansion is Impressive! Loved the history there.

On the side note: if you stop by the little gift shop they have there, you might also get to meet one of the most rare and unique dog breeds in the world - a 𝙓𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙞𝙩𝙯𝙘𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙚. Also known as Xolo (“sho-lo”) for short. (There is an estimated population of fewer than 1,000 Xoloizcuintles the United States).

Read moreThe Mexican Cultural Institute is a historic mansion in Columbia Heights NW. Several top government officials lived in it before the Mexican government bought it in 1921 as their embassy. When the Mexican embassy moved to Pennsylvania Avenue in 1989, this building became a cultural center.
The building itself is four floors with grand halls and rooms. There’s a salon, a blue tiled hall, and a grand hall. As you wind up the stairs, you’ll notice beautiful murals along the way.
