Stewart Inn Hotel Downtown Wausau — Attraction in Wausau

I am beyond livid with my experience with Randy, the condescending owner who answered my call and helped with my reservation. Here was my experience which I hope will alter his interactions with future guests. First, I inquired about the rooms available. I asked questions about the rooms, then rudely asked, "So you are looking for the most frugal way to do this?" I said no, I am inquiring about your availability. I explained that I have our 8 year old daughter with us and he replied that there usually is a hotel policy of 10 yrs and older as the hotel is not "kid proof". I explained that she is well behaved and that was ok with me, if it was ok with him. He explained that there was a $25 extra charge for an extra person in the room because of the breakfast and linens. I said that my daughter wouldn't be eating the breakfast (she's a very picky and limited eater) and that we would be ok if she sleeps in the bed with us if that can avoid the extra charge. He said ok that's fine and he proceeded with recommending the room which will be best for us. When it came to the final total of the room I chose he still included the $25 fee. And I said oh, I thought that we had discussed that I wouldn't have to pay the fee. And he said, no we will still charge for the extra person. I cancelled the reservation. I discussed this experience with my husband later and went on travelocity to show him pictures of the inn. He liked the inn but I told him about the fee and they may charge when we get there and he said, that's fine, and to book it. So I did.

Then 2 seconds later I get a phone call from Randy and then he starts with his condescention and explained his policy again about the extra fee. My husband said, he understands and that we will pay the fee but Randy started again to explain my previous conversation with him, as if we both were not understanding the situation (he was on speaker). I told him that I did not appreciate his tone and condescension and that we fully understood the situation and we will pay the extra fee. And then he said, no I am cancelling your travelocity reservation because of the 10+ yr old policy (which he previously said that he was not going to enforce with us). My husband reiterated that he is happy to pay the fee but he still refused and that he is cancelling our reservation. I have stayed in very fine establishments and have never EVER had this kind of treatment. I remained calm throughout our previous phone call through all of his boasting about his hotel, and criticizing other hotels in the area and I politely listened but his behavior throughout all of this was and is unacceptable. I really hope he thinks about his poor behavior and start improving on his customer...

I went to Wausau in May of 2019 and stayed at this beautiful Inn for one night. It was well worth the $. The interior of this former mansion is gorgeous! The innkeepers are super friendly. My fiance and I felt like family, in a way, when we first arrived. The man who greeted us was so friendly and inviting. He told us about great places to eat out, nearby. We ended up taking a walk into the downtown area of Wausau and found the cutest little co-op we've ever seen! We bought snacks, including a slice of delicious orange cake... It was scrumptious. It was interesting because, on our way to the little co-op, we were literally surrounded by 5+ churches. It was insane! Five or more churches on one block?! Woh! There was, apparently, an art museum close by as well - which we didn't get to see that time (in the future, though). One closeby state park to check out is Rib Mountain. Oh, it's incredible. We're talking billion-year-old mountains! You get a nice view of Wausau from up there! It's really fascinating. Anyways, back to the inn. It was breathtaking! There was a free library you could use during your stay, a little gift shop, they had a Keurig up the staircase, a television in your bedroom, complimentary breakfast (in the morning) - which was very tasty! You got to interact with your housemates during breakfast. So, you do sit at a table with complete strangers - which is different, however, an interesting experience. I loved the atmosphere of the inn. I will certainly go back, at some point! They gave us a card that described different ways of earning free credits, too. If you refer someone to the inn, you get a $10 credit! It's awesome. Inside of our bedroom was a bookcase of vintage/antique books. The bathroom was so pretty! The natural light coming through our little bedroom was just amazing. Can you tell that I want to go back to this place?! Oh, it was just a magical experience. You have to...

The Stewart Inn was the last stay for my wife and me on our way home to Minnesota from a week-long trip through Michigan's Upper Peninsula to enjoy the fall colors. I knew nothing about the Inn except for what I read on Tripadvisor. The reviews and pictures looked fabulous. We chose a stay in Wausau only because that is as far as I wanted to drive from St. Ignace, MI in a day.||Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Randy who gave us a tour of the beautiful home. When he showed us to our room, we were surprised to hear that we were upgraded to a nicer room than we had booked, although the original room looked plenty nice to me.||Randy then suggested that we might want to take advantage of a free art exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, a short distance from the Inn. They are currently running their annual Birds in Art exhibition. Randy must be clairvoyant because my wife and I enjoy birding. We had a wonderful time at the exhibit.|Returning to the Inn, we took part in the Wine reception where we met several of the other guests. Randy made suggestions to the group about where we might want to go for dinner. We followed his advice and had a very good meal at Ciao, an Italian restaurant within walking distance of the Inn.||I awoke the next morning feeling under the weather and told my wife to go to breakfast without me. Randy told my wife that he would be happy to serve us breakfast in our room. We were very appreciative of this kindness. The breakfast was delicious. In fact, my wife thought it might be her favorite meal of our entire trip.||In short, we consider our stay at the Stewart Inn serendipitous. Rather than just a stop on the final leg of our trip, we could easily see this Inn and town becoming a destination trip for us...
