West Bend Axe & Escape — Attraction in West Bend

This review is only speaking on the escape room portion of the business, since we didn't participate in any axe throwing.

First, the pros: The room was very clean, well organized, and the props, puzzles, locks, etc were in very good condition. Nothing was broken or performed poorly in any way and our gamemaster was friendly and helpful.

Now, the cons: If you plan to make this your first ever escape room experience: don't. It is not a good representation of what the industry has to offer. We did the Saturday night music trivia escape room and it required tons of outside knowledge, it included math, and the puzzle density was far too high: three things that generally are not included in other rooms. When we (a group of 4 escape room enthusiasts) completed the room with only 4 minutes to spare, having only used 1 clue, the bartender/gamemaster told us that she's never seen someone complete it that fast. This was with her having to look over our shoulder throughout the room to explain the loose connections between clues, puzzles and locks. I often don’t write reviews that are negative….but all you need to do is read every other review about this “escape room”. If you’ve ever done an escape room before, you’ll quickly realize this isn’t an escape room at all. It’s a bunch of puzzles that are irrelevant to one another and don’t make sense. I think someone of elementary level could’ve made the clues. The “guide” in our room even said to one of the puzzles, “I agree this one doesn’t make sense at all”.

We paid way too much money to do some puzzles that were, unfortunately, pretty lame. I feel like the owners/designers of this never have attended an escape room. We wish we would’ve read the other reviews before wasting our money. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time, and go do another real escape room or the ax...

I really hate to give a negative review of any business, but this escape room really was the worst we’ve ever experienced. I don’t say that lightly as we’ve done dozens in multiple different states. The website lists it as good for all ages, yet my 9 & 11 year olds weren’t able to help with nearly any of the “puzzles” which were all just a scavenger hunt for little stickers, in a dimly lit (and very loud) room, that gave very distantly related (and sometimes completely unrelated & nonsensical) clues to a word puzzle. While our gamemaster was friendly and helpful, if I had realized this was all just a big word scramble, I’d never have booked.
