50 years ago, as a kid hanging out summers at Grandmother's house (former W.Va Governors mansion built 1860-64 at 310 N. Front) walked island to this bridge now 170 years young, over, down Main or past The Capitol Theater to south Wheeling to catch the Greyhound Bus that went to Oglesby Park Country Club youth sports camp 4 days a week. The bridge walk in the early mornings, the Ohio running underneath, being a kid visiting and living summers every year away from Saint Petersburg, FL. this was a kick to the daily adventure golfing, playing tennis, equestrian horse riding, and oaring that were ahead after the hour plus bus ride up the mountain. After each days Oglesby Mountain Camp, and another hours plus bus trip down the mountain to lower Wheeling, the walk up the hill of downtown, getting to the music shop on corner of bridge street, i knew that when i walked around the corner of the music shop i would this awe-striking steel true cable suspension bridge from 1849. It meant that once i got over to the island i was just a half miles walk to yet another world - The Island Life - at grandmothers Wheeling island riverfront view from the bank back to the south of this timeless old bridge i had just walked over. Twice a day for several years several summers. I hear that still allowing limited widely spaced vehicle traffic over this...
Read moreTHEY GOT EARL!
Been livin in this town 47 years and I ain’t never seen nothin like this. This bridge? DO NOT CROSS IT.
First off, them chem trails been settlin real heavy ‘round here. Every time the church bells start ringin (which is ALL the time now), them clouds in the sky start twistin funny. And wouldn’t you know it? That’s when Earl starts actin up.
He says he’s hearin voices. But not normal voices. ALIEN voices. And they ain’t just talkin regular, they talkin Spanglish. Keep tellin him, "Earl, ven aquí, jumpito el agua!" And Lord help me, that fool LISTENS.
THREE TIMES NOW.
THREE TIMES I had to go down there and drag his soaking wet behind out the river. He swears up and down "they need me, Linda, they NEED me!"
Need him for WHAT? Aint no reason for a 72-year-old man to be cannonballin into the Lord’s water at MIDNIGHT.
I tried talkin to the town about it but they just smile and nod like I’M the crazy one. Well, I tell ya what, y’all can ignore it all you want, but when them alien Spanglish voices start tellin YOU to do things, don’t come cryin to me.
I've already been posting about it on all things south wheeling but my facebook account got locked because I didnt give them $100 apple giftcards. Luckily James Stanford, a pleasant young man helped me through it! ZERO STARS. WOULD...
Read moreI just like seeing suspension bridges. This was a very nice stop on a PA to OH and back road trip on Labor Day weekend. There is a road closed sign in front of the bridge but that’s just for vehicles. You can walk or bike across it. It was a beautiful day. We really enjoyed walking across and seeing the river. There is no fee and no ticket required. We parked on the street a half a block away.
This is on the National Road heritage trail - there is a little info sign about the history of the bridge and the trail right there too.
If you are parked on the side where heritage port is, you are crossing over to Wheeling Island...
