Really cool! At first, walking along the path, we thought the small signs were markers of where Venus Fly Traps should be, and figured we were here out of season. We were delighted to come across the pitcher plant garden! (You can probably tell I did absolutely no research before arriving and instead just got in my car upon finding a Carnivorous plant garden)
It’s really cool! My recommendations are if you want a peaceful stroll through the park, don’t go when the school next door is having recess! 😂 We were greeted by the cacophony of human children about 1:30 pm, to assist you in your planning of a peaceful walk- or a noisy one, if that’s your jam!
Also, it looks as though they might be redoing some of the pathways, so some bits were muddy/ covered in water- nothing major, just don’t wear your suede shoes like my husband did! (I told you we did no research!)
Really cool spot! I would definitely come back if I come back...
Read moreThe carnivorous plant garden is in the middle of town behind a school that is part of a nature preserve. Stanley Rehder, for whom the park is named, was a carnivorous plant enthusiast and cultivated a garden on this property. The city has taken it over and maintains it as a nature preserve. This is not going to be the highlight of a trip, but is a fun stop to walk out the easy concrete path to the boardwalk where signage instructs you on what plants are in the area and what their habitat and survival methods are. In order to see Venus Flytraps, you have to leave the boardwalk and go on the stepping stones (which may be covered in standing water) and look closely. There are thousands of them, and they are fascinating to see. Venus Flytraps only grow in this area of the world. It's a unique and fun visit for about an hour. We didn't have time to wander in the rest of the long leaf pine forest, but it seemed to be...
Read moreWe went on Tuesday of this week. My daughter has been going for over a year. I was using a walker, so she took photos for me with my phone. The fly traps are grown only within a 100 mile radius of Wilmington, NC. So, they and the other plants have been grown here. Stanley Rehder grew the plants and worked on this beautiful location for 25 yr. He started, cultivated and helped grow this area. The walkway has trees, ferns & 100 yr old moss lining the walkway. The trees are magnolias, pine & oak. All of this park is a tribute to Stanley Rehder and The NC Park & Recreation Department. Here are the photos taken. The walkways and the observation areas are well planned & people of all abilities can enjoy at least some of the park. You do not buy tickets. IT IF FREE...
