Travel back in time to the 1700's in Old Salem, a Moravian marketplace and village. Most of the shops have living history interpretors who are dressed the part and tell you about their tools and trade, such as the gunsmith, joiner, baker and tavern owner. The buildings and grounds are incredibly well preserved and restored. We spent most of the day there and didn't see everything. The artisans and storytellers go about it with an earnestness that is both charming and informative and the original architecture and artifacts are incredible. Despite being a tourist destination, it did not at all feel “touristy“. No one is pressuring you to buy anything, there aren’t gift shops everywhere.
