DISGUSTING! First, the wallpaper right at the entrance to my room was bubbling and peeling. Not a good sign. Then, the toilet seat was loose and wiggling. I noticed the carpet looked like it was rarely, if ever vacuumed. I soon discovered a FINGERNAIL (yes, a full size acrylic fingernail) at the foot of the bed, and these little pink bead things under both beds (see photos for reference). I bent down to take pictures of said items, only to discover what I believe and pray to God was food residue (like ketchup maybe?) plastered and dried to the baseboard of the bed. I went to set my phone on the nightstand to charge and there was some kind of residue on the nightstand -both sides of the nightstand! At that point I just had to stop looking around for fear of what else I would find, and got in bed (after inspecting that too, of course). Needless to say I never took off my shoes or clothing the whole night, and touched as little as possible. Why didn't I leave or ask for another room? Great question. I checked-in for my reservation at midnight because I was coming straight from a 10-hour shift and 3-hour drive. So I was basically sleeping standing up. Also, when I was standing at the front desk to check in, the clerk was already on the phone with a disgruntled hotel patron who said they ordered housekeeping services and no one came. The one clerk on the phone was explaining it to another at the counter and both seemed annoyed about the whole situation. So quite frankly, I didn't think anyone would care about my issues, and I highly doubted there would actually be any other room suitable at midnight. Sounds like there is a serious issue with the housekeeping staff here. Oh yeah, and check-out is at 11:00 AM. Guess who came knocking on my door to wake me up before 9:00 AM? Housekeeping. Oh the irony. They knocked and yelled on every door in the hallway until they got to a room that was empty. I heard her say "oh sorry" at least 5 more times before she was out of ear-shot. Why bother reading the "do not disturb" sign that was clearly hanging on my door? I got out of there as soon as I could grab my things. I gave "location" 2 stars because if you're looking for a hotel in this area - yes, it's located in the city. It's not in a dangerous area as far as I could tell. But I honestly don't know much about the area and I got in and out as quickly as possible. But this was hands-down the worst experience in cleanliness and management of housekeeping that I've ever seen at a hotel. Will never return. Would not recommend. Cancel your stay if you've booked here. Take your money elsewhere.

Loved the room had a regular thermostat and not one that you usually see in hotels. Had a great shower very clean had two drink coolers angreat variety of snacks although expensive. My cats seemed quite happy there which I really didn't expect. It was a $50 fee each night I have no idea what other hotels cost but reading the reviews of other hotels there's no way I would let my pets stay there and I wouldn't even want to stay there and it's either around the same price or maybe $10 for the time I'm looking forward to my second trip! at the time of my trip it was pretty much the same as the rest of the decent hotels. And they're very undecent hotels according to reviews in Winston salem the only thing I didn't like what you had to pay for the breakfast which I think was around $12 but I plan on staying there again it's definitely five Stars oh and there is a me niice lounge also.. on second trip the booking agency messed up my check-in date then messed it up again so I had to make three phone calls which probably took like 30 minutes my cats didn't make a single noise which was unusual for them when we got in the room they laid down on the bed like they were home and just relax all evening. So it's not just pet friendly it's pet approved. Also scroll down to look at their snack and cooler pictures it's almost like a mini gas station they have two drink coolers all kinds of snacks little tiny mini meals that you can put in the microwave and have the microwave right there they even have wine and beer and the hotel shampoo and just bar soap they have dispenser shampoo and condenser and body wash on the shower wall. And the staff is very nice and patient

I love it here. Honestly, if they had a monthly option, I would look into it, I want to live here I love it so much. A vintage crown jewel of Winston-Salem, but don’t let the historic facade fool you - the rooms are extremely nice, updated, and clean. Every room I’ve stayed in here is great. And the elevator to your floor - I’ve never seen a faster elevator ever! Super quick. The service is always great. All staff is extremely friendly and make sure things get taken care of quickly. The only thing I’ll mention is, there isn’t a free option for breakfast so just be aware(but the food IS really good I thought), and the keys can become demagnetized easily making it difficult to get into the room but this is minor compared to the entire experience. They also have a pool(when in season), a fitness center, and guest laundry onsite. There’s also a masseuse??!? I’ll have to look into that. The location is second to none. Right in the heart of downtown Winston and within walking distance of almost anything you’re wanting in the area. And since it has conference space, I’m thinking of asking conventions to set up here since it’s so nice! I would love that. I really can’t wait to come back.

My honest review is if you got the money go somewhere else. The best part of my stay was the hotel concierge, upon my arrival the guest check in was simple and easy with no hassle. The front dest cleck was very polite, professional and welcoming. The hotel was not bad however, and even had a very classic nostalgic reminiscent elegant look inside, also please note there is no free continental breakfast with paid stay. Although it is mentioned as one of their amenities. What they offered is the Hawthorne grill bar and breakfast is $11.99 per adult and half price per children. Therefore their ad for the hotel is misleading and falsified. The room was a basic room with very limited commentary for one person. There was no extras like soap, tissue, Kleenex, cups..definitely no thrills or frills. The next morning at 9: 38 I was being awaken to housekeeping knocking saying housekeeping still asleep I got up and answered the door and stated no housekeeping right now, however do you have another bar of soap, the lady looked me in my face and said in English no no soap. I gave her the strangest look and said no soap..you mean to tell me you don't have any soap on your cart. After a brief pause she said hold on and went to her cart and brought me two soap bars back. I said Thank YOU she never responded. Almost an hour later which was now 10:32 there was another knock on the door saying housekeeping but this time the housekeeper pulled the knob and began to enter, just so happened I had the security latch across the door and she could not fully enter. As I was just getting ready to enter the shower I heard the commotion with the door and ran to the door to see why was housekeeping back again..but now trying to come into my room illegally. Keep in mind my 9 year old son was sitting on the bed. By me not really knowing what's happening I ran out the bathroom half dressed and quickly slammed the door. Then slowly began to open the door and saw another housekeeper walking away she was on the phone and me now being perturbed asked her yes may I help you. Again this one also never responded. I said to her, I have a courtesy hour stay I will be out by 12:00 noon. She was still on the phone and she never said anything back. So with my experience at the Hawthorne I would definitely not recommend the hotel or would EVER be going back there for anything. It is a beautiful hotel inside but don't let the glamorous look and the glitz fool you it is cheap as all outdoors and the way the housekeeping get to treat the Patriots patronizing the establishment is all but asinine and ridiculous sad and sickening beyond words. Our hotel stay is from check in 3:00 p.m. and check out and 11:00 a.m. housekeeping will bother you anywhere from 9:00 until you check out almost feels like harassment or boot camp prison. There is no way ever anybody would convince me any different that this is a hotel I would ever...

I thought this weekend would be an enjoyable experience. Allow me tonsay that the State Dart championship was phenomenal and kept moving all weekend. That staff did their best with what they were given to work with.

The hotel and staff itself, I will never recommend to ANYONE. Let's start with rooms. We were there for an event that was happening at the hotel. We called 4 days before deadline to get the room for thebqupted price of 89 dollars. The staff told me they had no more rooms available for that price and gouged me for a room at 139 dollars a night with only one bed.

Add to this , no kitchenette... just a mini fridge and a microwave. They advertise an on-site restaurant and a continental breakfast, so I sucked it up and booked the room.

A decision I would later come to regret. Their continental breakfast was only bagels with two types of cream cheese and cold cereal. Two days in a row I went to try and find breakfast downstairs.... not even a whiff of anything hot. Yet I paid almost 300 dollars for a hotel room with continental breakfast for 2 nights.

Now here is the real rub - the nc State Dart Championship event is being held in there conference hall. There is no on site restaurant, and the event starts at 9 am and runs constantly through the day Saturday and Sunday.

The hotel manager/hostess began Saturday morning saying we could not have food or drinks in the conference room. No water bottles, no soda or Gatorade, only the food and drinks purchased from the hotel. Funny story, there is no room service or restaurant to get food from. And the only drinks she had at her minibar were beers that they were charging 7 dollars a piece for, and bottom shelf liquor mixing them in an eight ounce plastic cup that was given less than half a shot only to be charged 10 dollars a pop.

Nope. Complete rip off.

To top it all off, she threatened to shut down the whole event for the weekend unless we complied. So we did, however her actions effectively stopped a whole crowd of people from eating for over 12 hours because the competition was non stop. And let's not factor in that if you didn't have the money for overpriced alcohol, you had nothing to drink either.

As if this were not enough of an example of poor service, let's get to their promised check out time of 12 pm. When my husband left the room to check the car the day we were leaving, they had already disabled his room key at 945 am. Thinking it was probably an accident, we tried mine only to find it was the same issue.

Completely horrible staff. Nothing advertised by the hotel is available. It is only a complete and total money sink. Much as I like to compete, I doubt I will be giving this establishment any of my business in the future. State Event or not.

Definitely avoid this place if you want an easy and...

I am going to be completely honest. I came to the Hawthorne Inn on May 29, 2013. I thought the staff was very nice and the hotel room was very clean. I did like that there was a shuttle bus that takes you to the hospital since my mother was getting open heart surgery it was convenient. The only crappy part about the shuttle is there is a time frame at night and I had to wait for an hour at 10 at night for the shuttle which I thought was ridiculous! The worst part about my experience is I did know that it was a pet friendly hotel I have two pets at home so I wasn't worried about it. The first night I was there I noticed that I started itching a little and was starting to get a couple of red bumps on my right leg. I didn't think much about it, until the next morning I was really itching. I notified the front desk they asked to put me in another room I said no because since it was pet friendly it would not matter where I stayed, but they did clean my sheets before I got back. The next morning it was a little worse I had more bumps and was itching pretty bad it then was on both of my legs. Keep in mind I am a diabetic and when I get bit I scar and get infected pretty quick. I have been to numerous hotels in the past and have NEVER had a problem like this before but I have never been to a pet friendly hotel before. The day I left my legs were covered in bites it was AWFUL! I showed the manager and she said she would have an exterminator come and see if there was anything. I thought it was bedbugs or fleas or something. I left to get my mother and take her home and later that day the manager called and said the guy said there was nothing in their oh and before I left the manager wanted me to go to the ER and I couldn't because I had to go get my mother and take her home. I called my dermatologist showed him my legs and he said it was bites for sure and that it looked like I was bitten by fleas and possibly bedbugs which really grossed me out! Even today I still have a couple of scars because of all this. To make matters worse the manager did nothing for me to make me happy. I only asked if she would take off one night when I stayed there five night and she wouldn't even do that. She refused to do anything for me and to me that was HORRIBLE customer service. I have never been treated so badly by manager before in my life!! She basically made me feel that she did not care about what I went through since she had my money. The staff was much more nicer to me then the freakin manager was! I will NEVER stay there again and I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyway. I wish I would have stayed at this place close to the hospital that also does the shuttle bus its some sort of house associated with the hospital. STAY AWAY from...
