Old school beach motel with southern charm and hospitality. I've been staying at the Silver Gull yearly for at least 6 years and it's one of my favorite places to stay. Yes, it's an older hotel and has been going through renovations, but it's not all about how the carpet looks to me. It's about the atmosphere and the nostalgia.
I remember when this kind of hotel was all you had at the beach. There weren't any Holiday Inns or Marriots blocking the view up and down the beach, just little independent motels like the Silver Gull and it's really the last of a dying breed.
Sure, having all the amenities (and paying for them!!) is nice, but there's something about the nice comfort of local southerners who really care about their guests greeting you as you check in. You get a key, a real key, for your room and it's on one of those old fashioned cheesy fobs which I just love and miss so much. The rooms are a good size and everyone has a balcony to breath in the ocean breeze.
If you're looking for something fancy, then go to the Marriot or some other chain where you are just another guest number, but if you're looking for a step back into the sweet past of southern beach weekends in the late 70's (but with all the comforts of the 2010's) then stay at the Silver Gull. Bask in the North Carolina accents, chat (and flirt) with the sassy southern maid staff, drink too much and smoke too much and laugh too much and sun too much, then sleep it off and do it again because let's be honest with ourselves, we have a limited number of beach weekends left to us in this life and we should dig deeper into the experience than nice complimentary hand lotions and concierges. Really experience all of what the Silver Gull has to offer and then you'll truly know what it means when I say "southern...
Read moreStayed here the last week of 2023 during the off-season so I'll consider that in this review and just list the negative facts I experienced: Requested room as close to the ocean as possible in advance. They gave me one of the rooms farthest away from the ocean. The hotel was not full at the time. After checking in I found the toilet would not flush. The flapper chain was broken. They moved me to another room even further from the ocean. In addition, I had to leave all my stuff in the hallway and go back to the office to get another card key because the one they gave me didn't work. The TV had a bright spot in the picture on all the channels. Irritating, but ok. The shower did not have enough water pressure to take a shower. There was no cap for the drain to take a bath. Had to fill up a pot out of the kitchen just to rinse off after showering. The elevator stopped working on the day I had to check out. Had to lug a heavy suitcase all the way from the 3rd floor down to my car. This was a pain as I am almost 70 years old. Someone hit my car in their tight parking area under the building. This cost me $275 to repair once I got home.
The management was extremely nice though. I probably should have requested an adjustment on my bill for all the issues I dealt with, but I didn't. Their maid said that some rooms had water pressure and some did not, so if you stay here be sure to check that all the plumbing fixtures are working before you unpack.
Great location and price compared to the other hotels in the area that are within...
Read moreSilver Gull owes me nothing. The hotel was clean parking on the street was crazy but they have parking under the building what a relief. I had a double room Ocean view and let me tell you it was fantastic the balcony was clean the room was clean the sheets were clean this hotel room is clean. They have a full refrigerator two burner stove pots pans dishes everything you need for your stay. This made our stay so much easier we just went to Walmart got a some groceries and cooked and ate on the balcony listening and watching the ocean. The beach was nice and clean it's very accessible to the beach takes you about 5 minutes if that, you are walks away from the beach. I cannot wait to go back housekeeping was excellent the young lady at the front desk did a phenomenal job welcoming us and the best part is our room was ready before check in. We cannot wait to go back this is our new place to stay. If you have children or if you're Solo or if you are a couple this hotel is for you. They do not allow smoking anywhere in the building which is great they have ice machines on the floor housekeeping makes sure that if you need anything they get it to you, ample towels in the bathroom dish detergent in the kitchen cloths drying cloths , pots and pans to cook with, large microwave and dishes and silverware to eat, everything you can need to have a peaceful vacation or relaxation time without worrying about did you forget something or having to run to the store they took care of all of the small incidentals.I cannot...
