My husband booked this place without consulting me, and while it looked good (I love historic buildings), the service and booking arrangements were infuriating. Okay, it was off season, and maybe in high tourist season they would bother to hire a less than clueless Bulgarian check-in person with even a modest command of foreign languages and who knew how to deal with online bookings. But this gal sure did not. We arrived rather early a.m. 'before the boss was in', and she had no record of our booking, nor did she know the price. We were tired and rather impatient and she took advantage of this by overcharging us. Advice: If you are looking for a real cheapie in a great building and place, just show up here, don't ever bother booking online. You'll likely get the price they think they can get away with at the moment (ie negotiable) depending on how full they are. Again, marvellous location and historic building (former mansion, I think) and the rooms are quite okay for what would be the normal price, if we...
Read moreNice hostel in a good location in Ruse. We had 2 twin rooms and as we were a group they were next to each other with a sitting area and bathroom between the rooms which was nice and made it feel like we had our own apartment. The hostel is in a nice old building within walking distance of the train station and close to the town centre and Danube. The reception people may not speak the best English but they try and could communicate with us for what we needed and are really friendly so you can't ask for more than that. It was very hot when we were there but the building is nice and airy so as long as the windows are open there's no issues with the heat. ||The only negative Ivan think of is not particularly specific to this hostel but I got bitten a lot by mosquitos because of the closeness to the river (would have happened wherever we stayed and was outside as much as in the hostel) so if your prone to being bitten spray on some repellent before...
Read moreExcellent location - light and spacious rooms.
This lovely hostel gives you an authentic Bulgarian welcome when you walk through the door. Unlike a lot of the generic hostels found in Europe catering for roving parties of Interrailers this one gives you a more authentic feel. Do not be put off by the negative reviews. Yes, it is true that they do not speak English and no, there are not some of the same facilities you might find in 'super hostels'. What you will find are very large spacious rooms, a genuine and friendly smile and also a location slap bang in the old town of Ruse and minutes from the Danube.
What you lack in facilities and fluent English you will soon gain in getting to see a bit of real Bulgaria and a couple of nights away from the generic 'Euro...
