The plus side is that this place is really really close to pub street! The bad thing is the place itself. It seems to have seen some better days. The room I had did not have a safe. The power would shut off every now and then and when it would resume, the TV would turn on and the volume would be super loud and always be on some annoying infomercial that is dubbed over by the most annoying lady ever! It woke me up several times a night. ||The staff was okay and pretty helpful but there was a driver that worked for the hotel that kept looking butt hurt that I didn't hire him. At night they load the lobby with a billion motorbikes which was an eyesore.||The ac worked kind of. The remote stopped working for it which made controlling it a bit difficult. The towels did not feel very clean, so I used a tank top to dry myself after showering. I did have a large room with two beds which was cool.||I had them do a load of laundry and it looks like they hang dried everything as there was pink string tied on all my clothes. Air drying my clothes in the city left them smelling Cambodia fresh. All the scents you enjoy when you walk or tuk tuk around Siem Reap is basically what my clothes smelled like. But they were definitely cleaner and it was reasonably priced and convenient.||One thing I hated was the curtains. Red curtains!!! So when the sunshines in the whole room is red. Like hellish red. The room was basically always red even at night. That and the haunted television made for a very interesting stay.||I did not try the restaurant upstairs since there was plenty of great food nearby! |Being in such a tucked away area made me feel a bit safer since it was a bit away from the scheming tuk tuk drivers. Also, being that it was a cheaper guesthouse, the tuk tuk guys didn't flag me as a money mine.||I did visit some other guest houses in the area after paying for my stay here and there are definitely better, cleaner, and cooler accommodations around! Tip: don't be generous to the tuk tuk drivers or you will become a mark. They talk to each other about customers and fares,...
Read moreIt was 6 in the morning, and the tuk tuk driver from the bus station decided to drive me to this particular guesthouse instead of the one I suggested. I went a long with the ride because the tuk tuk wouldn't move and the guesthouse was cheaper than my original plan.
I decided to try it out, but was hesitant because the male receptionist was extremely rude with his broken English. I'm guessing the Golden Papaya Guesthouse has a deal with the tuk tuk drivers in order to fill the rooms. I was told that any dorm bed was $5 and that I could choose any. I went to choose a bed in a 4 person dorm. The bathroom was horrendous with a a terrible smell. The toilet was missing the seat and the floor was flooded. I was glad that I only booked for one night because I decided to go out and look for a better place.
Around 7-8, I locked my stuff in the very inconveniently placed locker downstairs. I don't know why they don't just put lockers in the rooms... As I'm locking my things, the male receptionist was very aggressive towards me demanding that I move my things from the 4 person room to a more crowded dorm room. I asked him why but he got even angrier and raised his voice towards me. He told me to "Yea yea yea, go". It was like conversing with 6 year old. I told him what he told me an hour (ish) ago that 'any dorm bed' was $5 and I got to choose which one. He was there when I chose my bed.
He just laughed but in a creepy 'I've got candy in the van' sort of way. He told me, "Yea yea yea no problem you leave refund go" so I packed my things and left around 8 a.m. After I headed downstairs, the male receptionist would not give me a refund and kept laughing. This establishment needs some needed staff training with some common sense improvements with the building. It takes 5 minutes to put a seat cover on those toilets and 30 minutes to clear the drain.
I stayed 2(ish) hours at this place, and I warn anyone trying to save a buck that it's not worth it. This place is scam city. I will be posting this review on many sites so everyone can avoid this tuk tuk -...
Read moreWhere do I start with this one… perhaps I’ll skip straight to the laundry situation! Arranged to have our laundry washed and dried with reception and made it clear to them that we needed it for tomorrow evening as we were leaving the following morning early.. yes yes that’s fine the woman at reception told us. Go there to ask for it on the evening.. as promised and you collect it and all is damp, then had to go and hang it back up myself in their attic up some precarious looking steps, then they have the audacity to charge me full price for it all. As a compromise they gave me an extra fan to dry some clothes in my room but it all just takes the piss. On a separate note the shower head points to the door and soaks everywhere you don’t want to get wet, you cannot turn the main light off in the room. Their whole attitude stinks and really stands out from anywhere I have travelled in Asia! If I was you, read this and...
