Curry King கறி ராஜா — Restaurant in Siem Reap

“When it rains it pours” they say. After craving for Indian food for so long from a long vacation and finally happen to find Curry king Restaurant in Siem reap we were so pleased to dine again like we always do in Phnom phen! I thought curry king would’ve given me some comfort but it was a totally disappointment this time! We ordered “North Indian chicken Thali with naan” and that kept us waited for almost an hour. FYI the restaurant was empty it was just 4 of us. When the food came it was all cold, just the Daal was lukewarm it also have a fresh smells of uncooked turmeric, the rice was spread just to cover up the plate. We managed to eat because we were so “hungry”!! When we asked for more servings “rice” to our surprise they said they have to cook now so it will take time, that’s when we were waiting for the 2nd serving! Right away we lost our appetite! When we complain to the manager he brought up with so many issues and problems which shouldn’t be the customers problem I guess?? Everyone is struggling at the moment because of the Pandemic, we understand there must be less staff which is happening in every restaurants and hotels but that doesn’t mean you serve your customers with cold food?! Your manager told us that the food had to be cooked one after another. Wow! ok now tell me, in this big restaurant do you have only 1 gas burner to cook?! If you don’t have enough food in your restaurant to serve you shouldn’t take the order from the time we walked in! Other restaurants in Siem reap they don’t serve us cold food because they are also struggling with this pandemic the same like you! Located conveniently just next to Pub Street in Siem Reap, Curry King Indian Restaurant (கறி ராஜா) is easy to find and offers a quiet dining option—at least during the off-season, when I visited. The place was almost empty, which may explain the very relaxed atmosphere. The indoor seating was clean, organized, and played soft Western music, creating a casual but pleasant ambiance.

I ordered the Special Curry King Choice Thali, which came with a variety of dishes including fried chicken, chicken curry, a mixed vegetable curry, and dhal curry. While the variety was decent, I expected a little more boldness and richness in flavor, especially given the name “Curry King.” The curries weren’t bad, but they didn’t quite live up to the regal name—they were just okay. That said, the masala tea stood out as exceptional—rich in flavor, aromatic, and perfectly brewed.

Service is where the restaurant fell short. During the meal, no staff came over to check if everything was okay or if I needed anything else. In fact, the waiters were mostly preoccupied with their phones. I had initially considered ordering more, but the lack of attention changed my mind. Eventually, I had to call for the bill myself. It’s not a major complaint, but attentive service would have elevated the overall experience.

Despite the service hiccup, Curry King is still one of the Indian food options available in Siem Reap. If you’re in town and craving Indian cuisine with a basic and familiar taste, it’s worth considering. Just don’t expect anything too extraordinary—come in with tempered expectations and you might enjoy a calm meal in a convenient location.

I recommend the owner, firstly to change the name of the restaurant and not to put India or Indian anywhere in the restaurant. Me and my friend (who is not an Indian but loves Indian food) and so does me, we basically went for the Masala Papad, which she really loves. We ordered Masala Papad, a coke and a chicken tikka. When the Masala Papad came there was hardly any veggies toppings over it, except the onions, no spices, no lemon nothing, but still managed to have it somehow. Ohh then then came the chicken tikka, there was hardly any difference in the chicken tikka and the stones, when we questioned this the owner did something with it, added one big piece of chicken and a bowl of rice (which we never ordered) but thought, as a gesture he might have sent it. Somehow had all the chicken tikka along with the rice, all dry rice, when I was about the have that big chicken piece, ohh my my it wasn’t cooked at all, when I complaint ruthlessly about that, he then agreed to cancel that whole item. I thought it’s fine, sometimes it happens and later on went to pay the bill he had added the rice into it, almost of the similar price of the chicken. When I asked him that, “why have you added the rice price into the bill?” He said, “it was someone else’s order, by mistake got onto your table” and added the price of the rice.
