Malis Restaurant in downtown Siem Reap certainly presents itself as an establishment catering to a mid-to-upper price range, which is understandable given its location and ambiance. However, the overall experience didn't entirely align with this expectation. While I appreciate having this level of dining option in the neighborhood, certain aspects left room for improvement, especially considering the cost.
One notable area was the comfort of the dining environment. Despite the price point, the restaurant felt surprisingly warm, which detracted from the overall experience, particularly in Siem Reap's climate. Additionally, the level of hospitality, while polite, felt somewhat basic compared to other restaurants in a similar price bracket. Simple touches like a waitress proactively pouring water, which are often standard in this range, were noticeably absent.
Regarding the food itself, I opted for the recommended scallops and the Amok Fish. While the dishes were presented adequately, the flavors felt rather mediocre, especially when considering the price. The taste didn't quite justify the cost, and I was left feeling that the quality needs to be elevated to truly match the restaurant's pricing and perceived target audience. While I commend the effort to offer a higher-end dining experience, some refinements are needed to fully meet those...
Read moreSecond time in two weeks I visited for breakfast. The sign outside says unlimited breakfast for 7 dollars, but make sure you have a little more money on you as you get charged 17 percent extra in tax and service charges. You can pay by credit card. I expected it to be buffet breakfast but you just order from the menu as many times as you want. This at first you think is a bit of hassle but actually it ensures your meal is hot every time you order, instead of having cold, luke warm buffet food. Orange juice is good fresh juice. The Breakfast just gives you a choice of eggs on the menu but comes out with two small tasty sausages. Bacon rashers tomato hash brown and small stringy mushrooms. Toast and marmalade and butter. I thought it was well worth the money. And I ordered twice and was full up. you order as many drinks as you want as well included in the price. Each item is priced individually on the menu which still was a bit worrying the first time I went there as I thought there maybe some small print I missed and the bill was going to be a lot higher. BUT THIS WAS NOT THE CASE. staff are friendly and the place is clean and tidy and looks the part, quite posh as we say in England. The only thing I feel it is missing is perhaps some cereals. Croissants. Fruit etc, that would probably stop the need to order...
Read moreHad such a wonderful meal here just now with my husband. We are still sitting in the outdoor patio which is beautiful. When they took us to our seat I expressed concern about mosquitos but all the tables come with 2 bottles of bug spray :) Now on to the food. Everything we had was very good. I was especially impressed with the pork and pumpkin soup - so flavorful yet still light, came with so many different ingredients including mushroom, green bean, dark greens and bamboo. Really unlike anything I’ve ever had before - I could eat this all the time. Also had the pork sausage appetizer which was very flavorful (and fatty but I like that). Morning glory was perfectly flavored - not too saucy. Also had the beef curry which I would recommend. The crab fried rice was good but probably wouldn’t get it again like the other dishes because it was most simple and straightforward. Our server was Panat and he was great - very attentive and nice. Our bill came out to about $30 per person (includes VAT and 7% service) so definitely on the higher end for the town. Also they have such a great happy hour! 2-for-1 (per person) and it comes with these delicious chips and a huge platter of yummy canapés (my last pic with the spoons of food). Drinks are $5 each so we got 4 drinks and a bunch of snacks...
