Overpriced, Overrated, and Unprofessional - Not Worth It
I stayed at Campo Base expecting a decent experience given the high ratings, but it turned out to be a major letdown. The single room I booked was ridiculously tiny and absolutely not worth the steep price. The value for money here is terrible, maybe better when you book a dorm.
What really ruined the stay was the guy at the reception who was way too pushy about selling tours. He started contacting me via WhatsApp three weeks before my arrival, telling me that tours would sell out, then again a week before, and even as soon as I arrived—before I could even put my bags down!
When I went into town, I discovered that all the tours were 15-20% cheaper at other agencies. By pure coincidence, I walked into an agency that works directly with the hostel. They offered me a better price, but guess what? The hostel forbids you from booking with them! The agency even called the hostel, and they outright rejected my booking. This behavior is insane and feels like a total scam.
To make things worse, during my stay, a woman had her phone stolen inside the hostel. This made the place feel far from secure.
To be fair, the place is clean, the showers are hot, and the kitchen is well-equipped. Breakfast was also good. However, there was no social vibe and the location for me was too far from the main street, which made everything inconvenient. There’s better options, even hotels if you have a good deal can be cheaper then the double or single rooms.
I honestly can’t understand the good reviews this place gets. While it has a few redeeming qualities, the overall experience was far too frustrating and unprofessional...

Read moreBoth the rooms and bathrooms were well maintained and cleaned daily. The showers and toilets are separated from each other so you never have to wait long if you need to go to the toilet. Shower temperatures can be a bit of a hassle to get right but I found most of Chile had this problem. Showers even include free to use shampoo.
The rooms included a fan which was nice to have during the hot day. The window was not in a good shape and couldn't be closed during my stay. Another inconvenience was the small size of the lockers which don't fit a larger backpack or normal carry-on sized suitcase (you also need to bring your own lock).
The place also doesn't accept payment by debit card so bring your credit card (prepaid creditcard like Revolut didn't work either) or enough cash.
The way they serve breakfast (buffet style) is amazing. Enough choice and you can even bring some snacks for takeaway. There is also a shared kitchen with the required cooking utensils. The hostal doesn't offer a laundry service.
The owner is friendly and speaks English but is sometimes hard to find when you need him.
It is not located in the centre but since San Pedro is so small it is not really necessary. Everything you need is within...
