In fact, giving one star is because there is no option for ‘zero.’ Honestly, this 8-days’ stay was disappointing. The cherished memories of over a decade are now gone. It truly saddens and disappoints me.
Hardware: Dilapidation is the theme. Over a decade ago, when I stayed at the Jianguo Hotel, it had an ancient charm with warm room decor. Across from my room, there was an old lady in the residential building who would daily perform the art of dumpling making at her window. Now, the hotel’s lobby, floors, hallways, and rooms lack any Chinese cultural touch or cozy ambiance, resembling the appearance of a low-end budget hotel in China. Outside the window, there’s a dilapidated building, and in the distance, the only view is the Grand Hotel Beijing, giving the impression that it’s saying, ‘If you don’t have money, this is the only hotel you can afford.’ The room facilities are outdated; elevator doors close rapidly, and a slight delay risks being caught. The hallway is filled with the smell of smoke (reportedly due to guests secretly smoking in their rooms). The room lacks sufficient power outlets, and astonishingly, there’s no power outlet near the bedside.
Service: Honestly, it’s not very good. Even though housekeeping doesn’t proactively change the bed linens, when requested, they fold the dry towels and put them back (I discovered this secret when a towel with my son’s nosebleed was neatly folded and reused). After enduring over ten hours of flying from Australia and getting off the car, the ‘doorman’ pretended not to see us, walked away, and when we entered the hotel lobby with our exhausted bodies, there was no one to welcome us until we were almost at the front desk. A decade ago, there used to be a separate check-in area for ‘executive rooms’ (unless I’m mistaken), but that’s no longer the case. The hotel lacks room service and doesn’t even have a proper restaurant. In the buffet restaurant, getting utensils is a huge challenge. The breakfast restaurant staff is extremely rude, and when the chef asked me what I wanted, he frowned and glared.
Breakfast: The breakfast is monotonous, and the food is very hard. Extremely unappetizing.
My first acquaintance with the Jianguo Hotel was around 1985 or 1987 when my uncle visited from Canada to see my dad. During that time, Jianguo Hotel was upscale, atmospheric, and had excellent service. My first stay at Jianguo Hotel was in 2011, and back then, it still counted as a decent hotel. Unfortunately, the experience of staying at Jianguo Hotel in 2023 was too regrettable; I won’t...
Read moreWe just finished a 5 weeks Asia tour and stayed at seven hotels. All were rated as 5-star hotels except JianGuo, but JianGuo stood apart as the hotel with the best service. This was my six year-old son's favorite hotel because according to him, he made friends from day 1. This is because they not only said 'hi" to him but they also talked to him and were genuinely interested in learning about what he liked or disliked about his trip to Beijing. JianGuo Hotel is a heritage hotel with many historic figures have stayed here over the years. Unfortunately, the facilities are not well kept. What lacks in facilities, JianGuo makes it up with its exceptional service. Many of the staff have been at this hotel for over 20 years, when the hotel was a five-star hotel. There is a smoothness in their service that only comes with experience. Since many are native Beijingers, they also know this city incredibly well, which is immensely helpful since this city is huge and not easy to navigate. The location is exception. It is right next to the subway station and a short ride to many of the major sights. The neighborhood is exceptionally quiet for Beijing and very clean. Within the first two rings, Beijing has more people than Times Square and has the cleanliness of a Times Square. In this neighborhood, which is immediately outside of it, it looks and feels like a completely different place. I recommend having breakfast onsite. It is a really deal and a good spread. We also ate at the Suzhou restaurant next door. It was great but a lot more expensive. We do not recommend eating at the Chinese restaurant onsite. We didn't eat at the French restaurant onsite. Within one city block, you'll arrive to Guomao, which has many good...
Read moreThis hotel tries to scam customers, it’s takes deposit 600 yuan then when checking out -they accused us of using their travel kit which was left in the bathroom with a price tag UNOPENED, when we corrected them that we didn’t use it. Then the assistant manager, charged or made up prices for dirty towels and a bit of baby food on the towel and hair dye slight stain on the pillow cover. The assistant manager doesn’t speak English, they don’t have any policies to indicate prices if towels are used and left dirty that we should pay for them nor do they have a price list, when asked the assistant manager who just laughes and doesn’t give the full deposit back. I mean which hotel doesn’t wash towels or pillow covers! We stayed there for 6nights and we had to share 2 towels between 5 of us and not once they changed our duvet or pillow covers but we didn’t complain but at the end when they tried to charge for using the towels and pillows makes me realise they don’t wash they duvets or towels! ||They don’t care about customer satisfaction just about trying to get as much money from us and also no hotel staff speaks English so it’s very difficult to communicate a taxi request or tours. ||Another customers that came they took deposit money in Euro’s then tried to give them deposit back in less yuan.||Hotel is far from all the main attractions and you have to get train or bus everywhere. ||Not had such an unprofessional terrible experience anywhere else ||It’s a 3.5star hotel but will soon loose stars if this...
