The hotel facilities are average for this class, but the service is dreadful. Very few of the customer-facing staff have adequate English to do their jobs, and while this is understandable in a provincial area, in a hotel pretensions to international status in a big city like Chengdu, it's not excusable that even the front desk staff can't string a sentence together in English in order to deal with foreign guests. It wasn't just language though; everything I had to ask the staff became problematic, and there was a real impression of a lack of any basic customer service training. On arrival I asked about a package I knew would be waiting for me; when he eventually understood what I was asking the desk clerk rang down to the concierge, and the assured me there was no package waiting. As he hadn't at this stage taken my name I'm not sure how that would have worked. I phoned a Chinese speaking friend and asked her to help, and lo ad behold the package appeared... Booking a train ticket was a trial and frankly it would have been easier to get a cab to the station and do it myself. I nearly missed my train as getting a taxi is another struggle - the hotel insist on phoning for cabs, despite the fact that 2 out of 3 vehicles passing outside is a taxi and any other hotel would just send out the bell hop to flag one down for you. Minimum wait 15 minutes. As you wait you can listen to the same single dreary bossa nova tune looping hour after hour. No wonder the door staff who have to listen to this dirge every three minutes all day have vacant expressions; after just 20 minutes it was driving me completely round the twist.||||Getting a meal out of room service was very tricky the first night and proved impossible the second, and when I asked about the possibility of buying a bottle of wine to go with it they apparently wanted the equivalent of $150US for a single bottle. While we're on food, get ready for breakfast - mediocre food obviously, but what's exciting is that they lay the tables with chopsticks and forks only - no knives. I didn't even dream of asking for a knife, but good luck if you want to eat a fried egg.||||The Minyoun is very good at patting itself on the back and telling you what an extraordinary 'hotel of beauty and elegance' it is. With the service the way it is, it's frankly pisspoor. With a real concerted effort it could raise itself to average. There are little cards around the place where you could nominate staff members for smiling; "turn me in if my smile makes you feel warm and comfortable". They could do with a lot less of this kind of fartarsing around and far more thinking about what international guests want and need, and, frankly, a bit of common sense. And I didn't see as much as a smirk from the staff - clearly they're just as hacked off with the place as...
Read moreI just got back today from Chengdu from being there on business. This is the hotel that I stayed in and I regret not one minute of it. I had a very fine experience and I honestly am having a difficult time trying to find something negative to say. It was that good. The staff (various lobby staff, receptionists, restaurant staff, and cleaners) were ALL top-notch and very helpful, kind, and courteous. They did things above and beyond what was even expected, and they did it with a smile. The staff was highly professional and should be commended. The location of this hotel is superb, it's nearly impossible to beat. It's right on Tianfu Square with loads of great shopping and restaurants. Public transport is all within 1-2 minutes walk, as well. The room was VERY nice, much nicer than ever expected. They had many very nice touches and paid close attention to detail. They even have a "Pillow Menu" with which you have a choice of 5 different pillows to choose from (see attached photos)...or all 5 if you like. The breakfast was the best hotel breakfast I have encountered in China (I've been to several cities for several months here). The breakfast had many great Western choices, as well as Chinese choices too. The large breakfast room even had a massive video screen showing beautiful drone footage of China, synced with pleasant music. It was well done. The whole hotel was well done. I see other reviewers here have had a different experience than I, and that's unfortunate, but my experience was remarkable and when I return to Chengdu again, there is no doubt that I will choose to stay at this hotel again, and I will do it without the slightest hesitation. I left...
Read moreThe surrounding of the hotel is noisy and dirty with construction sites. There are always puddles of water outside the hotel entrance. There are also large trucks outside the hotel entrance. The construction goes on through the night, making it noisy and difficult to get a good night rest.||||The room has a smell although I was supposedly on a ladies' only floor. The air-conditioning is not stable; the room gets warm at times, even in the middle of the night. ||||There was no Business Center in this hotel although the hotel website says it has. The reception told me to bring a USB drive to across the street to print my materials.||||Requested to extend check-out to 2pm. The reception agreed but the card access to the lift and the room was cut...
