Clean rooms, quick access to the Internet, complimentary tea and coffee, a sturdy table and chairs, readily replenished water and housekeeping every morning… these have become the standard features of most tourist/business class hotels. You also get a 65-inch flat screen LED TV with MANY channels in various Chinese languages. You will not get access to many digital platforms (like Google and its subsidiaries, Safari, Netflix, Amazon and the like) unless you purchase an eSIM and activate it before you depart your home country.
Despite that, Mercure at Guangzhou’s Tianhe Sports Complex is highly accessible. Just a 10-minute walk away are a sports complex, a train station, a few large shopping malls and a plethora of local food and well as some western names like McDonald’s, KFC and Starbucks. The hotel offers a decent breakfast buffet, worth the money if you just can’t be bothered to be making eating decisions in the morning. But I’d put my money on Tianhe’s street food and restaurants in the vicinity, some of which open from 7am and close after midnight. Shops nearby carry fresh local fruit and a variety of snacks that you can munch on while strolling from one place to another or taken back to your room for snack attacks.
You will find a very modest gym and 4 cute robots that run room deliveries while their staff attend to the reception and roving hotel guests. The staff are friendly and obliging. But the thing that takes the cake for me is the laundry room - boasting 7 washer-dryers, this is a hub of activity and even provides detergent, softener, anti-bacterial liquid and laundry bags to boot, hooks to hang them on the machine you’re using and a pen to mark your room number on it. Sofa sets and armchairs nearby mean you can surf the Net or read while you wait. A steamer also means you can iron out some clothes as needed.
My only grouse with Mercure at Guangzhou’s Tianhe Sports Complex is the awkward placement of the wardrobe directly facing the wash basin and toilet bowl but that’s a personal preference - I just don’t fancy my clothing amid humidity and potential germ flora with every flush. Some mattresses may also need replacing; mine had springs that weren’t equally supportive.
I enjoyed my stay and booked ride had little trouble locating me. Do look out for peak hour traffic, which can see cars being double parked for substantial durations and lots of two-wheelers zipping along the footpath. Oh yes, left-hand drive vehicles use the right side of the road, so please board only...
Read moreI recently stayed at the Mercure Hotel near the Tianhe Sports Center in Guangzhou and had a great experience. The hotel is modern, clean, and well-located — perfect for both business and leisure travelers. It’s just a short walk from the metro station, shopping malls, and local restaurants, which made getting around the city super convenient. One of the highlights of my stay was the excellent service at the front desk. A receptionist named Rose stood out with her warm and professional attitude. She was incredibly helpful during check-in, spoke fluent English, and gave great recommendations for nearby attractions and dining spots. Her welcoming smile and attention to detail made me feel truly valued as a guest. The room was spacious, comfortable, and very clean, with all the necessary amenities. I especially appreciated the quiet environment and comfortable bed after a long day in the city.Overall, I highly recommend the Mercure Hotel at Tianhe Sports Center. Read moreMercure @ Tianhe is located in an excellent location - 10 min walk away from a wide range of large malls including Grandview Mall, TeeMall@Tianhe, Victory Square, Tianhe Fashion Walk. With easy access to taxis, we are able to travel to other parts of Guangzhou from the hotel with ease. The hotel is spacious, clean, well maintained, well equipped and staffed by highly trained and helpful staff. The morning breakfast buffet is value for money - it has a wide range to suit health conscious individuals like myself and picky eaters like my children. We stayed there for 9 nights and our view from the 25th floor is spectacular especially at night. The staff were also very sweet and thoughtful - they took the initiative to pack breakfast for us ahead of our early flight at 6am so that we could have a warm and sumptuous meal at the airport before we departed. We highly recommend this hotel to any families looking for a clean, spacious, safe and accessible location for an amazing time...
