Firstly lets start with the view, this YHA is located at the very top of Mount Davis which has a comparable view to Victoria peak. It probably has the best view in Hong Kong for the price you could ever possibly ask for, 5 stars.
Sadly that's where the perfect ratings end. Its unique location at the top of Mount Davis means that to get there you must go up an incredibly long driveway which is poorly signed from the main road. Our first day we attempted to take a taxi up this road which was a painful experience as the taxi driver told us that most taxi drivers wouldn't even know where this place was and the few that would usually wouldn't even take us up because of the road. We had to take a taxi because the shuttle bus had left without us despite us being early for the shuttle bus. We found that the signage and instructions were very poor in terms of finding where we needed to be picked up and even once we found it we could easily have missed the bus.
Because you have to use the shuttle bus to get back down into Hong Kong, the schedule which it runs becomes very important to your traveling decisions, on the weekdays the bus schedule finished at 6:30 p.m. and on the weekends it finished at 9:30 p.m. this means that it was almost impossible for us to stay out and enjoy the night life of Hong Kong because we could not get back to the hostel if we stayed out later than these times. This was a massive inconvenience, 3 stars.
The room itself was pretty standard, it had two beds and an air conditioner and was generally as comfortable as can be expected from a YHA. No issues.
The general environment of this hostel is fine, it looks a little bit shabby around the edges but in general it is clean. However when you go inside the main reception there's a lot of stuff strewn around everywhere this makes it look like no one really takes good care of this place. In terms of facilities, the facilities of this area are pretty much standard, however in terms of laundry facilities there is only one washing machine and one dryer for the entire hostel, fortunately when we went the hostel wasn't very busy but we can imagine that in times where there are a lot of people staying at this hostel it would be very very difficult to use the washing machine.
Public areas like the kitchen and dining room were all clean and we didn't have any issues cooking or getting anything done in them.
My biggest issue apart from the shuttles was the bathroom. The bathrooms are located on the second floor of the hostel of which you need to go up an outdoor staircase to get to them. One of the nights we were there it was raining very hard and I had to go out into the rain which by the time I got back to the room I was completely soaked. 2 stars.
You should also know that once we turned up to the YHA we were charged an extra fee of membership which was not stated anywhere prior to turning up. This pushed the cost of a two person stay up by 150 HKD.
In terms of the people that stayed there. Most of the people staying there were local families having a weekend getaway, we didn't meet anyone there who we could talk to or hang out with in terms of traveling companions like we usually would at YHA's.
To summarize, this YHA has an incredible view of Hong Kong City but you pay for that by not being able to come and go as you please. In future I would opt to pay a little more money to get to one of the inner city YHA's where I could come and go as I please and not worry about being rained on whilst trying to use the...
Read moreWe wanted to go there by foot to enjoy the view. First on the way there is a wrong Mount Davis Hostel direction it take you to an abandon building. When you find the Mount Davis path it become very sloping. Once you check in you just go straight to shower. When you arrived you follow a high fence with barbed wire. At first we thought we arrived in prison.||||The receptionist ignore me during all the check in but later he spoke to me in english. Also you have an extra 150$ to pay to be member of YHA.||||When you book it’s kind of confusing. you don’t know exactly what you got. So I send an email to confirm the double bed.||||The room was so small, It remind me Chung King Mansion. We requested a double bed, but when we checkin to the room, we have to put the twin beds together to make double bed by ourself. Also you can not have access to the box under the bed where the duvet are. This is really smart. On the ceiling, the emergency sign is too big and the different emergency lights are too bright.||||Slippers are only on sell at HKD25. For the room key there is no deposit so I don’t know how they manage check out. Towels are to rent 10$ and 30$ deposit. It’s a very cheap small size one and it get totally wet after one shower. The next morning around the common area I saw abandon towel everywhere. It cost nothing to wash them and give to the next guest. ||||Bathroom is like the public toilet you can find in any hong kong parks. Its exactly the same design. In the shower the curtain are broken so no privacy. The shelves and hooks are too small, loose or broken so everything you put on it fall down. If you want water flow you have to press on the sink tap constantly. Even public swimming pool have better facilities. ||||There is a full restaurant size kitchen, you have everything you need. There are big pots and full set of utensils. I guest it is for groups. I saw people making bbq but I’m not sure it’s free. The strength of this place is the view and scenery. It is price less and it can easily compensate all the rest.||||I don’t know if someone work in hospitality in this YHA. They should look around and see what is going in the hostel world. Down the hill you have hostels with a high standard. Basically you are in a hotel where you share room. It’s a shame that a beautiful place like this with a such big potential offer a bad service in creepy accommodations. It remind me hostels...
