For its price, this hostel offers good value for its private rooms. But we had a less than wonderful stay here, mainly because we came in November, when the weather was cold and wet. In our twin room, a room heater was not necessary and anyway the hot water for the shower and faucet was very adequate. The room was clean and had adequate space but be careful of opening the windows as insects do fly in during the wet weather.|The staff spoke English well and were friendly and helpful. | Food was plentiful and you can find shops selling buns at 4 am - but the menu is all in Chinese! Local supermarkets abound at the streets off Jiaozhou Rd and of course, high end shopping and eating are available at Yuyuan Rd just behind the Jing'An station.| I would rate this place a bit below "Very Good" for the following reasons. The location, in an alley off Jiaozhou Rd is not too prominent but is well lit at night. There can be renovation works as well as garbage collection going on!| Getting here, the walk from Jing'An station can be tricky with luggage as the sidewalk can be narrow. You have to watch out for electric cycles as they are quiet, go against traffic and very often, are not lighted!|The interior has an intentional grungy unfinished decor - all in good fun - but it can be a bit off putting at first. | Finally, a tip for getting here from the Jing'An metro - be sheltered from the elements - at least for a little while before you brave the elements. Take exit 3, go through the entrance to the shopping complex and after a while, look out for the exit to Yuyuan Lu on your left. There should be a glass swing door and heavy drapes (weather sealing types). Go through these, go up the escalator to Yuyuan Rd, turn left and first turning to the right is Jiaozhou Rd - and then a 10 minute walk - with mainly almost no cover from the...
Read moreWe took a flight to Shanghai from Guilin and found that the property is easy to access from the airport via the subway and a fairly short walk from Xiang Yun Temple station.||||When we first arrived at the property we realised that it was down a back alley from the main road and was a couple of metres away from a fairly busy petrol station.||We booked our stay with the property via booking.com and didnt notice that there was an extra 15% service charge added onto the overall room rate in the small print at the bottom of the page so be sure to check that before booking your stay. This is the only place we stayed in china that had a service charge added on, yet there was very little services available and our bed sheets weren't even replaced once throughout the stay.||||The staff behind the desk seemed misurable, abrupt and as though they really didnt want to help us with any questions that we asked throughout the stay.||||On the description of this place it stated that there was a rooftop terrace, a kitchen and a bar... but the kitchen and bar are no longer in use and are closed off so this should really have been removed from the description.||||In the rooms there were tea cups and a kettle but no complimentary tea to put into the cups. The rooms themselves were quite small (there were 3 of us sharing one room and we struggled to have enough space to unpack the majority of our things), our window view was of the petrol station and the window didnt completely shut so we did have a bit of noise coming through at times. On a good note the rooms were clean.||||I probably wouldn't recommend staying at this hostel as I think it is overpriced for what it is and I'm sure you can get a friendlier hostel/ hotel nearer to the centre for the same if not a little bit...
Read moreThis was a pleasant clean small hostel close to the subway. It was a bit out of the Shanghai tourist area. That made it interesting for us. It had some food shops close by - we particularly enjoyed the street side fruit and nuts stall where the couple running it roasted the nuts on the premises. Not sharing a language did not matter. We communicated and bought delicious roasted nuts. And yummy persimmon. The staff at the hotel were really helpful, offering to research train costs and using the map to give us directions. Despite that we wandered off in the wrong direction but got it right the next day. Having the metro close by was great. It was quiet at night as everything seemed to stop. The room was clean and low key. The linen was fresh and the beds comfortable. I like mine firm and they were. The curtains were blackout so stopped the outside light which helped me sleep. Walls are a bit thin and we could hear someone with tummy problems next door. But that was okay. It wasn't us being miserable. It was good to begin the day with breakfast either Western or Chinese and the costs were acceptable at 75 Y for two of us including two hot drinks and cereal and toast and fruit and mixed rice. The shared areas were low key but comfortable and it was helpful for us non Chinese speakers that two of the staff had some English. Local Chinese people also stay here and we enjoyed talking with them and learning more about the country. It also catered for families. There was a small kitchen at the back which guests could use. It had a microwave but no cutlery or crockery. Still a good...
